So are transfer trials actually a thing or am I dumb (self.starbucksbaristas)

I'm transferring across the country, which I've done before with 0 difficulty. Two quick papers to fill out, couple phonecalls, bam done. This time it's been like pulling teeth, I call stores and either the SM is busy or not in, I leave messages and never get a call back. Finally a store I call tells me they are taking transfers, happy to have me, etc... But it takes 2 weeks to get a hold of the actual SM despite multiple messages and speaking to the ASM. That's all well and good, I figured it was no big deal since the actual process is so simple.

What no partner I talk to tells me is their SM apparently requires a 5 day trial run with transfers to make sure they fit with the team. In a general sense I can see why that would be nice, but... huh? I've never heard of that being a thing and when I was like "uh I'm moving 2500 miles in a month, I can't really do that and not to be rude but it took forever to get a hold of you so I was kinda counting on this."

He didn't really offer me any sort of alternative, just said he'd get in touch with my manager. Almost a week later I ask my SM if she heard from him, but she had not. I think he was trying to blow me off but I'm not the best with social cues.

Have any of you even heard of this kind of a policy before or was this guy fucking with me? (it wasn't a reserve store or anything special, not even in a super populated area)

Hello there! I'm a manager for sbux, have been with the company for over a year and a half.

The concept of transfer trials is asinine, especially in your case. Its not Starbucks policy to have one, although most SM's tend to be more accepting of people who have picked up shifts at their store, that way they can have some sort of insight on this new person that they're bringing in, whether they have the appropriate skill set for that store, are dependable, customer friendly, etc, but it's not a requirement. I'm the manager at a reserve bar store specifically, and we do not throw out someone's transfer request simply because they only have standard Starbucks training. We welcome all hard workers, so even if it was a reserve store, that's little reason to decline you in such a way.

That SM was just trying to dodge you, man, although the reason can be anything from here to there. At that point, you also might not want to work for this person either way; they seem very unprofessional to not give you a straight answer/not follow up.

I'm a 3 year partner originally from one of the highest volume stores in California and I have a culinary degree and have run my own kitchen. There's not much at any bux that I couldn't handle at this point, so not to toot my own horn or anything but it seems weird that a store that wants transfers wouldn't be willing to take me in blind even if the excuse is for the sake of team building.
