Advice for training a very young, uninterested green bean? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by realsheeps
I'm a shift at a corporate mallbucks and I've recently become responsible for R, a brand new hire. She is 16 and this is her first job. Some of my best partners were hired at 16 and 17, so I'm really trying to give this girl a fair chance, but I just cannot get through to her.

Tomorrow will be her 7th shift with me and she just appears to be getting more and more disinterested. I've repeatedly had to tell her off for using her hands to handle food, she isn't retaining any drink information I'm trying to teach her, she's blasting through the online modules in 20-30 minutes, and whenever I try to bring up to her her inattention or lack of interest, she just says she's tired.

She's still in high school so I understand that she may be tired, and I don't want to write her off so early, but she isn't improving at all. All she seems to care about are the free food/drinks and when she can clock out. I've repeatedly asked her how I can help her remember things or how I could make it more interesting, but at this point it feels like I'm bending over backwards for nothing.

I'm hesitant to tell my manager because I don't want her to be viewed in a bad light, but a lot of this just seems to tell me that she's just not mature enough for a job yet. She just doesn't care.

Do any of you have advice?

I would talk to your manager regardless so they can help in the matter. They might offer information as to why they thought she would be a good fit which might make getting through to her easier? You don’t need to shoulder the responsibility of figuring out how to make it work on your own !

She is only 7 shifts in. That's not enough time to have a good opinion of her, imo. I am glad you are being patient with her, but just try to put yourself in her shoes. You should try holding her accountable, maybe give her deadlines like "I want you to know all the drinks by next month", ect.

Starbucks isn't an easy first job for a teenager. My first job was as a grocery store cashier and I still f*cked it up a lot, lol. Maybe keep her on register for awhile, until she gets comfortable with that and then move on to bar, CS, ect.?

If she is still uninterested in a month or two, she will probably leave on her own

That line of action was where my heart was heading. Thanks for the advice.

I think talking to your SM for advice is also a good option.
