I'm a hot mess on bar PLS help (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by uncivilOG
I've been working at Starbucks for over a year but the only thing I'm struggling with is baring with out having a panic attack or getting so much anxiety and stress that I just start messing up and spilling stuff everywhere and I just can't seem to get it under control. I just get super overwhelmed and want to cry but I push through it. I would like some tips to help me become faster and less messy while I bar.

I think the problem is you are thinking too much about pushing the drinks out as fast as you can, you are putting yourself under too much stress by thinking that you have to go as fast as you possibly can right away. I work at a busy store so I also had this problem. Just be confident in the fact that you know what you’re doing, you know how to make every drink, you’ve been there for a year. My trick is that every time time I start a shift on bar, I go into it slowly and let myself get comfortable, that way when a peak or rush starts I’ve already let myself adjust and get in a good/comfortable groove, so I’m not stressed about going as fast as I can right away. Just following sequencing and start slowly and as you get into it you’ll naturally go faster without stressing. Messes are inevitable, literally look at anyone’s bar area after a peak and you’ll see. You can only go as fast as the machines will go, so if there is a huge build up of drinks don’t let that get to you.

Always take things 2 at a time, try not to focus on the lines or cups (hard I know!), and just remember to breathe! If it’s super chaotic someone will come and help you get through the cups but if they don’t customers can wait! There will always be shitty customers whether you’re stressing yourself out or not so just do your best to focus on your own happiness/mental health <3

I thought that’s said PSL help and I got triggered.. I’ve been a partner for about 8.5 months and for my first 6 months I worked at a pretty low volume store in a small town where I struggled with that same issue quite a bit. I feel like sometimes the environment made it worse for me (when I worked with uptight shifts I’d feel more pressure, causing more anxiety) so I requested to work at different times when said shifts weren’t present or when I knew I’d work with my favorite coworkers. Having a more relaxed environment made rushes and peak breeze by. It felt like a dance barring with my best friend/favorite shift, we just flowed so beautifully. But if you have strict availability or the environment isn’t a factor something that helped me when moving to a new store where I knew nobody was just saying eff it and going at my own pace whether it affected window times or backed stickers up. People are so rude and get so worked up (which is understandable when you look at it from a customer POV) but ultimately they chose to spend their money at your store and to be frank, they can see when it’s busy before they go in or when they’re waiting behind 5 other cars in drive. It’s not a mystery that when the parking lot is full it’s gonna take some time to get your order out. I choose to ignore the rude people and just do me and work efficiently while maintaining a calm and collected attitude.
Also I’m constantly a mess but as soon as it dies down I’m wiping everything down and getting ready for the next wave.
