Baristas, does your store/district allow you to work full-time and easily get benefits?(self.starbucksbaristas)

So I’m a shift supervisor and I easily get scheduled to work full-time and receive benefits, but essentially every barista at my store does not. Also, baristas are almost always scheduled for shifts that are 4 to 5.75 hours, basically never 8 hours shifts. Almost every barista struggles to get 15 or more hours a week and our turnover tends to be high. Subsequently, my life as a shift supervisor has been especially strenuous and it’s hard to not be cynical and bitter. It just feels like we’re doing nothing to keep good partners and I find it really frustrating. As I understand it, every store in my district is like this to some extent. Is this a company wide problem? Do you experience it? When I was first hired as a barista (back in 2014) I had no problem getting 35 or so hours a week.

It could have to do with availability’s and labour. For instance if partners are available 7-5 but your store can only support the shift working an 8 hour in that period and instead needs shorter shifts to balance labour. My store is very slow and we usually have an 8 hour opener and then many 5 hour shifts and then an 8 closer ~ usually 8 hour shifts for shifts. Could be though that you manager has over hired and doesn’t have enough hours for the baristas or their availabilities don’t support store needs so they continue to hire more ? I would mention to your manager the feelings amongst the partners. Usually getting partners on benefits is seen as desirable as it means they will have incentive to stay with the company.

That's kinda odd, as most of the stores I know of do their best to give baristas as many hours as they ask for (within reason)

I’m a barista and am normally scheduled around 25 hours a week, give or take. I’m constantly asking if people need any shifts covered. I want to keep my availability open but eventually I’ll have to make to less open and get a second job. My store is the busiest in my city, so I don’t really understand the hours.

I was in the same boat, open availability, low hours. I then changed my availability due to getting another job and my manager was mad. It was super annoying
