A question about money (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by karrielp
(Idk if this is the place for questions but it seemed to fit, sorry it doesn’t belong aha)
(Also I’m on mobile so..sorry abt formatting)

TL;DR: what’s the starting wage at Starbucks? Can I ask for more money if I think I have good qualifications?

So I’ve applied to a Starbucks walking distance to my house in Utah and I feel I’m a fairly strong candidate, I’ve had 3 jobs in the food & service industry before (they were fairly short stints as I’m a student) and I have even more experience through an advanced culinary class through my school (prostart if you’ve ever heard of it or care lol).
So my first part of my question is how much do baristas usually make starting out? I know it may differ place to place but I figured I’d start with a rough estimate on what I could be looking at. My other question is if it’d be out of place to ask for more, either just stating what I want to be making or if they ask somehow.. aha that’s probably repetitive but you get the point.
I also was wondering that if I have my servsafe manager certification, does that mean I can ask for more money? Or is it just a fancier version of a food handlers? Does anyone on this subreddit have any experience with something similar or some sage advice THATD be great lol.
This entire post may seem really entitled and like I want more money even though maybe I am too young or under qualified to ask for that, but this being my fourth job & my first job after 18, and having to help my mom with bills, I’m basically determining if I’ll have to get multiple jobs. I also just don’t want to walk in with a demand that could be seen as excessive or entitled. Any help would be GREAT.

No that’s completely fair to ask because what job doesn’t ask what you expect to make and what you previously made? Starbucks for what I know from being a 6 year partner all starts off at the starting rate and you get raises ( a few cents to a dollar) every 6 months. You could possibly start off as a shift ( it’s hard even being super experienced just a lot a lot of stuff to learn ) and start off with a higher pay rate. But even then it’s a starting rate that’s not adjusted to my knowledge. Keep us updated l!
