My management has threatened to cut my shifts/force me out of work because of family health issues (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Ryan5899
Hey All! Just like the title suggests. I got a call last night at 12Am that my dad (who is in failing health) had another heart attack and was being rushed to the hospital. I drove down immediately as any good child should do and I called my home store to let them know what has happened. It is probably good to mention I have been a partner for just over 2 months now. This shift leader (who does not like me) then proceeded to yell at me saying how the store is depending on me to be there for my 6th consecutive 9 hour shift. He then had the nerve to say that my shifts can be cut and that my job could be at risk because I left to be with my dad. He then said

“it’s a heart attack if he isn’t gone now then he probably won’t be gone today so you have no reason to be heading down”.

I love my job at Starbucks but this is my family and I feel like I should not have to choose between a job and being with my family. And definitely having my job threatened bothers me. So fellow baristas what should I do.

Call PRSC. Cutting your hours is considered retaliation and they can get in serious trouble for it.

First of all, I'm so sorry this happened to you and I really hope your dad is ok! Second, your shift has no ability to fire you, cut your shifts, or really do anything. It was an empty threat. Tomorrow, you need to talk to your store manager, not a shift supervisor, explain what happened (Mondays are their admin days so they should be there). Starbucks policy allows for such family emergencies. It happens. If the store manager threatens your job like the shift supervisor, or asks you to sign a write up, don't sign it. Come back here and I will find the proper documentation that protects you.

The only issues is SM has decided to take a 2 week vacation 4 weeks before he is scheduled for his 6 months “coffee break” sabbatical

Ok then talk to your proxy SM. If you don't know who it is, ask a supervisor (NOT the one who threatened you). If they don't know, ask for District Managers number. If they don't know that, call PRSC. The number can be found in the partner handbook you were given when you started, also in the front of the big white book where you can write in your punch times.

He's full of shit. He has absolutely no power to do any of that. Your shift is power-tripping and showing a disgusting lack of basic human empathy. I would bring it up with your SM asap.

My mom passed quite suddenly in December, and while I have several issues with things that happen in my district, when we found out her health was rapidly declining, all I had to do was call my manager. The district pulled together to cover my shifts so I could leave to care for her as soon as possible.
My job and hours were still there when I got back, and my manager has made a point of checking in with me regularly as he knows I'm really struggling with her death.
THAT'S how things should be. Not whatever it is this shift of yours thinks he's doing.

That's etaliation. Which is ILLEGAL in the U.S.
has absolutely no right to do this, so I would definitely get in contact wirh your district manager or PRSC.
