I feel like I'm not catching up as quick as I should(self.starbucksbaristas)

Hello! I started working at Starbucks last week and I've already done a test run on most job roles. This is my first time working in a food-related customer service position. Today I was on register for the second time and my trainer had to repeat some things several times, to the point that I think I'm starting to annoy them with my lack of understanding and the fact that I can't remember basic things. The least I want to do is slow others down, specially in a rush hour. Mostly I think I just have to get familiar with the menu so that I can run the register better. Still, with each day I'm feeling more frustrated. It also doesn't help that English is my second language and sometimes when they ask me to do things I don't understand, half those times they end up doing it themselves. Is it normal to take a while to get used to the job?

It takes so much longer than just one week to nail everything, including the register! I've been working for 6 months and I STILL forget things. I made notecards and memorized things that way so I could get a better understanding on most things, so if that works for you maybe try that! Just know that you're doing amazing, and the fact that you want to be better than you are now shows how devoted you are!

Full honesty - at my store we have a rule of thumb. It takes normally at LEAST 3 months to get everything down. The average is about 5 months. For me I swear to god it took me 6 months to get that “aha!” Moment and have confidence to make all my drinks 100% by myself during peak. One week will NOT cut it trust me lol. Not even one month. It gets busy and sometimes more experienced barista will forget what it’s like being new. We were ALL there at some point and asked the silliest of questions sometimes. When we get overwhelmed basic concepts become confusing and stressful. It’s 100% alright :). My store manager even says she’s still learning new things every so often. She’s been working for Starbucks 6 years! And is 50. I believe in you man!

Hello! I really understand your feeling and your frustration... cuz I was totally like you and also I am working outside of my country using my second language. I had 2.5 years experience working other food industry in this country so it’s my big help to get this job and to get used to it here. but still a bit struggle mainly about drinks. My country also have SBUX but I only visit 2 or 3 times in my life. I’m not coffee person I’m not Frappuccino person... what’s latte? What’s mocha?? That was my first step...lol so it was hard to understanding about till too. thanks to my store partners. They are so patient... now I work for 7month, then i got promoted to barista trainer last week:) so don’t worry. Don’t be stressed All partners are so kind and very patient cuz same struggles when everyone started. (I still need improve my English though...:p) Don’t be nervous don’t be negative. Set a goal everyday and try to work on it, then you will be okay. And enjoy your work, this is the most important thing:) Hope this helps....

I’ve been working there since September and I’ve had to be retrained twice! It wasn’t until late January that I started to get the hang of things! You’ve got it :)
