Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Bruuuuhhhh. (A rant) tl;dr Customers think they can cheat the system but THAT JUST AIN’T IT SIS. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lizzybeth722
I had a lady come in today for her mobile order. Venti Latte, triple, extra hot, no foam, (a syrup of some sort I believe), and that’s it. She comes in during peak, stands at the handoff while I finish her drink, and as soon as I hand it out she asks me, “Did you make this with milk or cream?” I look at the label because I was in autopilot so if it was on the sticker I made it with what was on the sticker (you know how it be) so I said, “Looks like I made it with milk.” And she goes, “Oh, could you remake it with breve. I can’t have milk.” and I VERY POLITELY say, “yeah, sure. But just for next time, make sure that when you send your order through you add that so we can have it made for you properly. Also, we do charge extra for drinks made with breve so we will have to charge you for it next time.” And she has the audacity to tell me “Oh, well it’s always the same price when I order it. I get it eVeRYdAy without a problem. Yknow what, don’t even worry about it, sorry to iNCoNvEnIenCE you.” She grabs the drink, goes to the condiment bar, pours half of the drink into the trash, and fills the rest with the half & half from the carafe.
Literally the next mobile order: iced doppio in a grande cup, light ice, extra nonfat milk.
Me: *leaves room because there’s no way I’m giving this person a latte*
Customer: can I get some more nonfat in here?
Me: sure, next time we are going to have to charge you for an iced latte though because that’s what this drink is
Customer: *literally just ignores me and leaves*

Am I the only one that’s so fucking sick and tired of customers trying to cheat the system and take advantage of “nice” baristas that let them off the hook “just this one time”. This shit isn’t fair for customers that pay full price for their drinks and order it properly to avoid a remake (esp. when they want to add things that we normally charge for to the remake). I’m not doing it anymore. If they want an alt milk but “forget” to order it, oops sorry, go back and pay for it. If they want you to make them a latte but order a doppio with extra milk, they’re either getting extra room or paying for a fucking latte. If they want to place a mobile order, they’re getting exactly, to standard, what they ordered. No more of this, “Okay, but next time.” It’s time for, “Unfortunately we are going to have to charge you for this because customers that do remember that they want an alt milk do get charged for it.” and more of, “I’m sorry but anything more than 4oz of milk is supposed to be accounted for. Customers that order lattes have to pay full price for them so it’s not fair to them if we give you one for a discounted price for cheating the system.”

she can’t have 2% but can have breve? That is utter BS. I’m lactose intolerant and breve is way worse on my stomach than 2%
lizzybeth722 [OP] 42 points 4y ago
I KNOW THATS WHAT PISSED ME OFF TOO UGH!! I’d understand if she wanted soy or something but you’re gonna tell me you can’t have 2% and that you NEED breve. Fuck you man 🙃
KelseyDove 8 points 4y ago
Mmm can’t have milk..but wants Breve that’s also made of milk.🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
AdrielleFox24 3 points 4y ago
I would’ve asked her what she was allergic to in milk and made a big deal of cross checking the ingredients in the half and half “for her safety”
Kaywin 1 points 4y ago
I’m lactose intolerant too, and I’m thinking your body is reacting to the fat, not the lactose. Breve has less lactose by volume because it has more fat by volume. But excess fat can have much the same effects as lactose if you’re not used to it (Stomach cramps, flatulence, diarrhea)

I do keto as a rule and I always get heavy cream in my iced coffee. When I was way stricter with my keto, if I had breve instead I would get such a reaction because it had more lactose. Nowadays it’s doable because I’m not quite as strict so it isn’t as much of a shock to my system
troubleholly 48 points 4y ago
honestly, i see this soooo often
lizzybeth722 [OP] 20 points 4y ago
Too often :/
coopervaudrey 47 points 4y ago
ya or the trenta pink drink with no ice and 2 venti cups of ice always pisses me off. my store has multiple people try this a day
nora_the_explorur 10 points 4y ago
we have a regular who asks for a doppio in a grande cup and then ANOTHER cup of hot water. I can't remember what her BS reason is...
KelseyDove 6 points 4y ago
Ah! So this is what it is. We have couple of customers who have done this at my store. Honestly it just a hassle to go through multiple cups to save up .30 cents or so.
YoshisShadow 5 points 4y ago
Trenta Strawb Acai, no water, no ice, no berries. And then a venti cup of Ice. Killin me.
pinsandbeatles 4 points 4y ago
People do this all the time at my location! Obviously, I know what they’re doing, but is it really against policy? How do we enforce against that?
epitaph_of_twilight 10 points 4y ago
Basically Starbucks doesn't care if people find workarounds. The company would rather have satistifed customers who come back and continue spending money even if they get a bit of a discount than a customer who gets upset and doesn't come back.

I always tell my baristas to not take these things personally. It's not like the 70 cents they're saving is being taken from your paycheck
coopervaudrey 2 points 4y ago
i really don’t know. some of the shifts at my store tell them they can’t but others don’t bother. telling them they can’t is honestly not worth the hassle but it’s still really annoying
bexbux 2 points 4y ago
Then when someone let’s them do it they say “well I’ve done it before. I don’t know why you can’t do it now.” Leaving them confused and probably angry.
kannakoolaid 40 points 4y ago
I'm sorry if this offends anyone in the comments, but I can't stand cheap people. Just pay the extra money for the drink you want. If you're cheap, just go to the gas station for a coffee
pinsandbeatles 6 points 4y ago
Or don’t go to a company that’s known to be a little overpriced... that’s what bothers me the most. Coffee is not a necessity. Especially at noon. If you can’t afford it, don’t come in.
robotcrackle 40 points 4y ago
I had a lady mobile a toasted bagel and when she came in she asked for cream cheese. I open every weekday morning so I was always catching her try to get it free. I literally stopped what I was doing (usually drive thru) and made her pay for it and every time asked if I could help her find it on the ordering screen.

After a few times repeating this to her visible annoyance, she finally came in one day and was like, 'look I did it right!' and I just wanted to laugh.
lnrpkrj 16 points 4y ago
To be fair, that app is not as developed as I would expect an app from a company as large as Starbucks to be. It honestly confuses the bejesus out of me sometimes. (Obviously non employee here)

It took me a solid three minutes to figure out how to add cream cheese to a bagel. And I’m not technology deficient, I promise. I’ve tried several times to figure out how to mobile order a venti decaf iced vanilla latte with coconut milk, but cannot for the life of me. Mobile app only has options for iced blonde vanilla latte, but i can’t change the espresso to decaf. Or the vanilla bean coconut milk latte where I CAN change the espresso type but I CANNOT remove the vanilla bean (it never mixes properly with the cold and I hate the gritty texture it settles to.)

Help a girl out. Lol.
robotcrackle 24 points 4y ago
Okay, I got you. Pull up drinks on your menu and scroll down to Cold Coffee. Then scroll way down to Iced Lattes. Hit See All 7 so it shows you more options and you should see Iced Caffè Latte. From there you should be able to customize what you want.

Pick the size first.

Adjust ice if you want, second.

Hit Espresso Shot and Other Options. (the standard will say 3 shots in black) The next screen has option to select blonde or decaf. Select Decaf (or half caf or whatever) and then hit SAVE at the bottom. It will back out into the previous screen and under '3 shots' it will say Decaf in green.

Under that is 'Flavors' where you can pick Vanilla syrup. A standard Venti iced latte has 6 pumps. You can go up or down. Save again at the bottom and you'll go back to previous screen again. It'll say 'Vanilla' in green

Under syrup is Milk. It will say 2% but if you tap it, the menu will come up in the same screen and you can select Coconut.

That should work.
lnrpkrj 9 points 4y ago
You’re the best. Just favorited it so I can’t mess it up. Thank you!!!
robotcrackle 4 points 4y ago
See, this is all I wanted to do for the other lady. The app IS confusing. I'm glad I could help!
ColVictory 9 points 4y ago
So, if you're starting with a "blonde" drink, you definitely won't be able to switch to decaf because we don't have decaf blonde roasts.

To order this, select "Iced Cafe Latte," in the order screen under "Cold Coffee."

You can select "Decaf" under "Espresso and Shot Options," and "Vanilla" under "flavors," and "Coconut," under "milk choices.

I'm guessing your confusion comes from assuming "Vanilla Latte" is a drink in and of itself, whereas from the Starbucks perspective it's just a "Cafe Latte" with vanilla syrup added.

Confusingly, the "Vanilla Bean Coconut Milk Latte," is it's own "drink," not just a "Cafe Latte" with vanilla bean powder and coconut milk in it. I know. It's ridiculous.

However, if you ordered a "Cafe Latte" with Vanilla Bean and Coconut milk you would get more or less the same thing. Difference: the VBCOL(Vanilla Bean Coconut Milk Latte) has its shots poured over top of the milk like a latte macchiato, whereas a "Cafe Latte with Vanilla Bean and coconut milk" would have its shots on the bottom. Even though they have exactly the same ingredients. I know. It's bonkers.

TL;DR YOU CAN IGNORE EVERYTHING AFTER "MILK CHOICES" IF YOU DON'T WANT AN UNNECESSARILY DEEP LOOK INTO HOW STARBUCKS INVENTORY WORKS. That should be all you need to order the drink you want.
jojokangaroo1969 1 points 4y ago
I'd love to be able to order light coconut milk on my pink drink but it's not an option. Or even order a sugar-free caramel 8 pump latte with fat free milk and light ice
snidejenner 1 points 4y ago
Idk about other stores but our Starbucks does not carry sugar free caramel
whatismineisyours 25 points 4y ago
One big thing I dislike about Starbucks is the huge need to make the moment right for a customers to the point where it makes it terrible for us partners.

As many good moments I have had I will always remember the shitty customers that we let walk all over us.
YoshisShadow 2 points 4y ago
Damned if you do, damned it you don't.
Make the moment right, remake their drink till they're happy, assume the best, etc. And then "why is milk waste so high?! Why are times so high?!" Le sigh.
epitaph_of_twilight 1 points 4y ago
Customer Service score is the most important thing rn
whatismineisyours 1 points 4y ago
Exactly
helgathehorriblez 23 points 4y ago
While I agree it’s frustrating, we are supposed to make the moment right. As a suggestion, there is a feature in the hub to report customers who abuse the third place. You could also contact partner resources and speak to someone. Explain you’re getting frustrated because while you’re trying to make the moment right, they’re abusing the companies generosity regarding remakes and explain it’s a few specific customers- remember to go in prepared with this. I usually duplicate a receipt so that I have the info. It will have all of the specifics so they can research it later. Explain everyday this customer does this, remind them that this customer does it daily and of the cost of product not to mention the disruption it causes in sequencing plus add in recovery cards for the next few customers (because you know they had to wait longer and since you sequence two drinks at a time that’s at least two customer receiving them) reiterate that this is DAILY and ask how they want you to handle it. They may want you to document for a few days, then typically there’s a game plan set up by the DM with the SM and SSV to handle it without you needing to deal with it again. What will likely happen is the customer will do the same deal, expect it remade. At which point you’ll alert you SSV or SM and they will take over and explain that they’ve documented the occurrence frequency and that we will not be remaking their drinks moving forward, they’ll only me made to what the stickers says. They may offer to remake it today, but after today if it doesn’t say breve they won’t be remaking it. They may offer to show the customer how to fix the “issue” in app as a nice touch. The customer with do one of two things 1) fix the issue moving forward or 2) leave and not come back- in which case we save money. Overall, I’ve found many partners aren’t aware of the full depth of how partner services can help us because for some reason it’s kept a secret. This is essentially the same way you’d get rid of an abusive regular, without getting a write up or complaint on you. I suggest doing this immediately following any incidents (make sure you’re always staying in the clear- doing what’s right) and should the customer contact corporate there’s already documentation in your favor. Make sure you’re offering to remake “mistakes” and giving out recovery cards. This shows you’re at least attempting to make the moment right and connecting with customers. Good luck!!

Edited:spelling.
lizzybeth722 [OP] 13 points 4y ago
We have a group chat for our store so I let everyone know the name and order of the person, so if they continue to try and finesse the system, they know the customer has been informed and should be charged instead of “making the moment right” again and again. That being said, the SSV and SM are aware as well and will back us. I didn’t know about the partner resources so thanks for letting me know about that!
helgathehorriblez 8 points 4y ago
It just backs you should the customer complain to corporate. It also protects you guys since the DM gets a copy so should someone file a complaint against the store or anyone in particular- there’s ample documentation so you don’t get in trouble. It also shows you understand Starbucks system for handling incidents which can be used in your favor should you desire a promotion. It also adds a customer history should the customer act stupid to support banning them. A group chat is fine for one offs, but if they’re continuing to do it to a point where you’re getting that frustrate, consider taking the righteous path and report it to corporate, it honestly can feel really good to let corporate know what the trench rats are up to and feel vindicated should they try to throw you under the bus. Don’t let this job get to you like this. It isn’t worth it. Utilize whatever resource you feel appropriate. Maybe start with a group text but if there isn’t resolve- try the corporate route.
marcysmelodies 13 points 4y ago
I had a guy order espresso shots with extra heavy cream in a grande cup and I charged him extra for the cream. I had to listen to him complain our prices were going up and that I charged him too much because the other baristas just charged him for the shots
whatismineisyours 15 points 4y ago
That happened to me too. He is a regular too, Americano no water, steamed heavy cream. My first week I charged him for it, and he said that's too expensive to which I say no, it's correct. And then goes on to say "you must be new here because no one else charges me for it."
DontAtMeMan 8 points 4y ago
Just my two cents: if they want some breve or heavy cream, I don't worry about it. If they want it steamed, though, that's a service and they have to pay for it.
whatismineisyours 3 points 4y ago
Yeah, wouldn't have done it if he didn't want it steamed. But to also want nearly a venti cup of heavy cream...
DontAtMeMan 3 points 4y ago
I get where you're coming from. Not criticizing at all. Just thought I'd share what we do at my store.
interyx 3 points 4y ago
All right here you go, three shots of espresso, four ounces of steamed heavy cream. Enjoy!
NanobiteAme 6 points 4y ago
10/10, my manager doesn't stand for customers cheating the system. You want a doppio with ex cream well okay, sorry but I can only give you about an inch worth of cream.

"But the other stores let me—" Let me stop you there. The price of "with cream" only justifies adding a little bit of extra milk, which is why there's no cost. If you want I'll gladly remake you a latte, which is what you're asking for. 100% my manager will stand behind us on this. Sorry but our store will not do this.
Sammiche 6 points 4y ago
We have a lady who gets a venti water with five scoops of matcha powder. We were finally instructed to ring it up as a custom tea latte.
dowry_fraud 2 points 4y ago
There’s a custom iced tea button that I use for matcha + water
YoshisShadow 1 points 4y ago
I love that they think thats "healthy" or something.
jendestiny114 6 points 4y ago
Dudeeeee so relatable. And sometimes I do be the “nice shift” and let it slide but at one of my stores we literally would make them go back in line and fix their order. It was like every day we had multiple instances. It is annoying as hell.
YoshisShadow 3 points 4y ago
I was totally just talking about the 2nd drink in a rand on r/starbucks. Probably shoulda put it in here.
We call it a "Poor man's latte" and its killing us in milk waste.
3 shots iced, with some syrup, in a venti cup with cream (or w/e). Inevitably they ask for their cup to be full. Bah! So frustrating! You are not alone.😡
Ladysm1th 3 points 4y ago
There's a guy who will throw a fit until whoever's on register gives him 2 shots over ice in a trenta cup and then will fill it up to the top with cream from the condiment bar
Kaylushhh 2 points 4y ago
Espresso in a Trenta is a big no no. I would never give it to him.
Ladysm1th 2 points 4y ago
Unfortunately, our SM who is afraid of conflict makes us do it for him.
CaitCaitCaitMomo 2 points 4y ago
I have a guest who orders a cold brew with salted caramel cold foam but insist on extra drizzle and cold foam at no extra cost because “they always give it to me of no charge.” I’m literally stuck not changing a regular an extra 1$ because we allowed this behavior.
eightoonine 2 points 4y ago
i had two instances of this today! a doppio over ice with nonfat (to the top please!!), caramel syrup and caramel drizzle. okay?? so u want a caramel latte with caramel drizzle. charged her for milk bc it was over four ounces and she got mad and i ended up just giving it to her free of charge. also had a dude get a tall brewed chai in a grande cup filled with water to the top...so i said...ok a grande brewed chai?? he obviously got annoyed and was very adamant that he wanted a tall chai filled to the top of a grande and my managers just made me give it to him. we have to give these people cheaper drinks because it’s easier to deal with them that way and it’s just beyond annoying. like cough up the .50 cent difference like everyone else and be on your way bro
interyx 2 points 4y ago
To be fair the second one is just more hot water, which I don't have a problem with. Now if he asked for an extra teabag I would charge for either a grande or an extra teabag.
eightoonine 3 points 4y ago
yeah i realized that after i posted, it’s definitely not the same as asking for extra milk or an extra tea bag. i think it was super annoying at the time because it was one of those days where it seemed like everyone was salty about something and i was just done lol. but yeah you’re definitely right, i feel kinda bad for getting annoyed with him :/ hope he comes in again and i can make it right
lizzybeth722 [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Ugh exactly! Like people are just so unwilling to pay CENTS more. If it was actually a sufficient amount more I’d understand trying to find your way around it.
LZARDKING 2 points 4y ago
There’s no way around the iced espresso problem. Just fill the cup. I’ve thought my way around that and there’s nothing to be done about it so just fill it. But yea that First Lady was a bitch and how can you have cream but “can’t have milk” wtf kind of allergy is that?😹
epitaph_of_twilight 3 points 4y ago
I always pull the shots over a full cup of ice, shake it to have the ice settle after, then add more ice before filling it up with milk. Gives the appearance of a full cup and cuts down on the amount of milk you have to add. Customers are none the wiser
trueinfinity14 2 points 4y ago
god, this stuff pisses me off to no end. i feel your pain
TinyItalian 2 points 4y ago
Ugh this is so accurate it hurts
Caitlinxz 1 points 4y ago
This is a huge problem at my store but tbh it’s the stores own baristas and other stores baristas that get in the habit of letting people get away with all the time that make it happen so often: my own coworkers are extremely lenient with not charging people and when I have to ring them up for something it creates a whole issue of “oh but last time they didn’t charge me for so and so” 🤷🏻‍♀️ now I’m more insistent on my coworkers ringing things up right so it doesn’t create problems with the employees who DO charge everything correctly, so that customers don’t get confused.
Zeldaluvr2007 1 points 4y ago
This makes me so mad! On occasion we get people who want the no ice drinks, and my managers always have me give them a full cup, despite agreeing with me about them cheating the system. Like, bruhhh, you're just encouraging bad behavior! 😤😤😤
Turtle_Sensei 1 points 4y ago
This is why I hate ordering ahead. I know my order is complicated. So I just order and have them scan my phone to pay.

Sorry people are dicks! I love you guys though. I'm not a Barista, just a fan. Keep up the good work guys!
lizzybeth722 [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Don’t blame yourself though. The app is pretty complicated and honestly stupid sometimes. You have to REALLY know how to navigate it or know the drinks.
Turtle_Sensei 2 points 4y ago
Yeah I order the same 3 things, I don't like change much lol. I do sometimes do orders for a friend in California who is homeless atm and I get her a free coffee, but I don't think she does this? I hope not!
lizzybeth722 [OP] 1 points 4y ago
See, that’s another thing. You know that there are people that choose Starbucks and pay full price for their drinks even if it’s not quite in their budget. But the people that try to cheat the system are the ones who you know damn well can afford the extra 50¢ they’re trying to save.
minivanlife 1 points 4y ago
Well, now I've downloaded the app to see what kind of mess I can get myself into.
lizzybeth722 [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Barista advice: just try to educate yourself of the menu and how things work so you don’t come off as someone who’s trying to cheat the system. Also, welcome to Starbucks rewards!
minivanlife 2 points 4y ago
My sister worked for Starbucks for like 10 years. She transferred with them when she moved to NYC. I'm more or less scared to order from you people. Y'all are viscious.
lizzybeth722 [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Okay, not gonna lie.. we are 😂 Some more than others. I tend to be more patient but I had a bad day already and after 7 remakes, customers like this just get to me. I used to go to Starbucks every day for 2 years before I started working for one so I know both sides of it and try to be more understanding.
minivanlife 2 points 4y ago
I'm a nurse. We have our own culture, too. Some dark humor and sharp tongues with our own definitions of stupidity. But honest to God the way y'all present yourselves online...I pretty much never go there anymore. You guys need some anger management and a vacation and cocktails. Lol You all sound burned TF out.
maddiecreates 1 points 4y ago
While I completely understand how frustrating it is to know the company is being taken advantage of, in the grand scheme of things, we baristas do not make enough money to be worried about someone cheating the system when our company tells us to make the moment right for them.

My advice is to check out what another commenter said about reporting it in the hub, but also try really hard to just go with the flow and move on with your day because it isn’t worth it to waste time being upset, just my two cents :)
