Shift duration question... (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by 080605
Do you typically work 8 hour or 5 hour shifts? I was being scheduled for 8 hour shifts when I first started (I’m still super new) and now I’m getting less and less. I drive 13 miles to work one way (30 minutes due to dirt roads) so it’s not practical for me to be driving that 5 days a week for only 25ish hours of pay. My car is a gas guzzler. Anyone else dealing with this?

ETA: I’m also being put all over the place in terms of start times. One week I’m doing early mornings then the next it’s evenings and then the next it’s a mix of everything in one week. The inconsistency is harder for me to juggle with my family schedule too. Is that typical of food industry jobs? I’m in my 30’s and re-entering the workforce after having a bunch of kids. 😜

I was always hired as a part time flexer in a group of full-timers with kids and elderly care situations so this is normal for me. I only need to have 20 hours a week now that I want to go to school through the Achievement Program in Fall.

I would talk to your SM as they make the schedule. Maybe if they could put you on for longer they could also give someone else a different shift they want. It may require working some high volume/labor intensive times of day. Sometimes there is not a lot they can do but they are the only ones who have a direct say in it. Might get the ball rolling or at least reassure you that it is temporary until you develop your skill base to handle peak hours.
