Pet Peeve of the Day: “Environmentally Aware” Customers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Caitlinxz
The summer seems to bring them out a lot more, but today was an especially bad time for them. Had a female customer who looked young 20’s get a venti hot tea, so my coworker double cupped it bc it’s STEAMING in our store (broken AC) and she starts tapping loudly on the counter to get her attention to say “don’t double cup it !! You’re wasting paper!!” And the counter was wet so my coworker went to throw out the cup and she leaned over to tap her POS machine to get her attention to stop her even when she explained she can’t use it anymore and said we are making so much waste until we just stopped responding and she left in a huff.

Second customer, also youngish woman, gave back her drink Bc she wanted a nitro lid to reduce straw usage. Okay, cool, switched her lid and threw out the old lid bc, again, it’s contaminated by the product so I can’t use it again. I feel her standing there staring at me but since she already got her drink I go back to making other drinks and the SECOND I TURN BACK TO HAND OFF THE DRINK she asks why we aren’t putting the nitro lids as standards or, in her words, “the straw free lids”, and I kind of answer in a rush we only use those for nitro drinks or cold foam ones. I turn back again to finish drinks and she asks me again that I should be using that lid as standard bc Starbucks is using up way too much straws ?? And keeps standing there staring at me waiting until I turn back to hand off a drink to continue asking me about why we can’t just use the strawless lids until my shift sees me and saves me by asking her to please step to the side if she isn’t waiting for her drink since there was a lot of people waiting for theirs.

I just don’t get how people who are so “environmentally caring” can be assholes to employees who have no control over how the company uses it’s resources. Don’t get mad at me Karen bc we have to hand out straws with the drinks, complain to Starbucks.

I’m afraid of that happening here (NYC) and making it even more of a hassle to give out drinks than it already is :( especially during peak hours where it’ll be dozens of people hounding for straws

If customers used common sense to fix their own problems how easier working would be ...

This one lady comes in and always makes a scene if you put a stopper in her soy latte, one day I pointed that she should get a reusable cup and she was about to raise her voice but just walked away at the last second.

Customers pointing the blame until you give them an legitimate viable solution to their problem 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just say, "Wow you caught me, good eye! HEY EVERYONE THIS IS UNDERCOVER BOSS and Karen here has just tipped the scales - Effective immediately, I am implementing the official nitro lid standard in Karen's honor! Yay!"

Commenting on Starbucks' Facebook posts would make more of an impact.

Me and my coworkers always talk about how good it would be if they did an actual undercover boss for Starbucks so they could see how bad it is from outside their offices. Maybe then they wouldn’t make up so many unnecessarily complicated drinks like the new Frappuccino’s when they have to make half a dozen of them during a rush.

And I agree with the fb thing, those are people whose jobs are actually there to address problems, I’m just here to make the drinks.

I had a customer freak out because I told her I could not give her a hot drink with no lid. Like I am not going to hand you a drink thats around 165 degrees with no lid ok.

I also love the oh well can I have the other lid? I'm trying to go strawless, you know saving the sea turtles!

If you're that "environmentally aware" then bring a fucking reusable cup and/or straw. Jesus fucking Christ its not hard. We have reusable ice cups for $3.

individuals reducing personal waste are laughable. if she really cared, she'd be campaigning for companies to reduce waste, you know, company-wide.
