What do Starbucks baristas hate?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by blonderthanbefore
What kinds of things annoy Starbucks baristas when customers are ordering? Are complicated orders annoying to baristas, in general? I don’t go very often, but since I don’t go often I don’t have much experience ordering. I normally have fairly complicated orders because I like sweet coffee drinks, and I just wanna know if that’s annoying to baristas?

asking for water at the handoff counter is my absolute #1 pet peeve
blonderthanbefore [OP]12 points4y ago
imagine going to the checkout line before shopping and asking the cashier for your groceries ? ? ?

Quick fire ordering. One👏🏼thing👏🏼at👏🏼a👏🏼Time👏🏼 I’m fine with most things as long as you’re not being rude and/or aloof

“how dare you not be able to keep track and remember all of the seven modifications and 4 add ons i’m requesting >:(“
isabellargrover3 points4y ago
The exact opposite is also horrible. When they decide that we're too stupid to understand them speaking more than a word per minute so it takes 10 years to get the order through!
StillKnockers2 points4y ago
Or you ask them to repeat one thing and they repeat the whole damned order.
hahagenevieve19 points4y ago
pour overs are annoying lol but most things aren’t too bad.
blonderthanbefore [OP]5 points4y ago
sorry, i don’t know much about coffee drinks at all, what are pour overs?
hahagenevieve5 points4y ago
it’s basically just brewing coffee for a single cup :) they actually tend to taste better but they can def be a pain
blonderthanbefore [OP]4 points4y ago
oh okay gotcha, thanks so much!
Cvais3 points4y ago
I second this lol I’m new and was on POS, had 2 decaf pour overs back-to-back in the same day and was like wait wahh?? While I was also brewing for a traveler haha

i’m actually starting as a barista at Starbucks on my college campus in the fall (just had my interview two days ago) and i don’t go very often right now so i thought it would be interesting to hear these responses as a customer so i can try and be mindful and make it a little easier on the baristas if possible AND to get an idea of annoying things to brace for before i start working there!
NopeNope441 points4y ago
I’m starting as a barista in a couple of weeks and that’s basically the reason I’m on this subreddit lol. Good luck!
blonderthanbefore [OP]2 points4y ago
Thanks so much, you too!

When you have 10 frappes and 5 refreshers to make and a family orders 5 venti ice waters and complains that they’re not out on time. :)
blonderthanbefore [OP]7 points4y ago
very reasonable. some people just have a hard time understanding that the world doesn’t revolve around them lol
Salty-Lemon9 points4y ago
When regulars say “oh the barista knows my order” and won’t even tell me what it is and just wait for the person on bar to catch their eye and start making their drink - I’m still a bit new and learning, how am I supposed to learn your order if you won’t even talk to me??? And I have to ring you up somehow so...??? This one lady does this and *never* smiles back or responds to my greeting - so rude
blonderthanbefore [OP]3 points4y ago
I absolutely HATE this. I used to work at Subway and we would have regulars say the same thing, with whole ass subs ???? I think it’s so self-centered to think that all the workers should have your order memorized (not to mention to hundreds/thousands of customers a day) and not even bother to tell you so that you can ring it up. Thanks for your feedback!
Caitlinxz8 points4y ago
When it’s super busy and a customer stops me putting a sticker on a cup after the got rung up saying “NO! I TOLD THEM I WANTED THAT ICED/DIFFERENT SIZE!” and I have to dead pan look at him and say this isn’t your order. And they don’t even apologize just walk away like they didn’t just freak out over me pointing out they’re not the only ones who ordered a drink.
blonderthanbefore [OP]6 points4y ago
People that don’t work somewhere they are ordering from assuming they know every part of how the place is run and the process so they gotta help you along 🙄
Caitlinxz1 points4y ago
Or realize that they’re not the only people who ordered a drink LOL
blonderthanbefore [OP]1 points4y ago
Exactly. Thanks so much for the feedback!

Modified Frappuccinos!!!!!!
blonderthanbefore [OP]2 points4y ago
Does this just mean frappuccinos with different flavors or components than are already advertised or on the menu? Sorry, I feel like that’s a silly question but I wanna make sure that doesn’t mean something different that I’m just unaware of!
Cvais3 points4y ago
Yes that’s what that means. Modifying the milk isn’t that big of a deal or even adding some espresso, but especially when it’s summer or Frappuccino happy hour and you’ve got several orders of frapps and you’ve got them all with X pumps of this and X pumps of that no this, extra this... it slows us down
blonderthanbefore [OP]1 points4y ago
thanks so much for the feedback!!

Getting to the window on drive through and then adding to your order, causing the time to get screwed up. Another one I hate is people who are angry over wait times. A lady ordered 10 venti pink drinks and REFUSED to wait for us to bring it out to her while the line was stacked 7 cars behind her. Then people started honking in frustration but she still insisted on waiting at the window and when I suggested using the Starbucks app for a large order next time so it’s ready when she gets here she said “I don’t have time for that stuff.” I really just wanted to dump the trays all over her Lexus and her smug face. She drives off and then I have an angry man yell at me that he’s never had to wait so long in his life. I didn’t say anything. I just stared at him with the deadest eyes I could muster until he finally shut up and actually had the grace to look embarrassed while I stared him down silently.
TL;DR please don’t make drive through hell by adding to your order last minute or placing a huge order and refusing to pull around and park so we don’t get every customer behind you yelling at us because you’re special, pls and thx.
kaylawaylabb7 points4y ago
When your store is poppin and you have amazing souls either stand at the pick up area watching you make their drinks or RIGHT behind the mastrena (espresso machine) peering into the depths of your soul hoping you’re working on their drink and only their drink while completely ignoring the snake of stickers, stacked cups and the other 50 people in the lobby waiting and proceed to ask “any idea where my drink is?”
blonderthanbefore [OP]3 points4y ago
ah yes. i used to work at subway and obviously that’s all very open and you are watched the entire time you make the food, and then there are people literally watching you put the sub together at the same time they are whining about “why is it taking so long???” like you are literally watching me make it!!!! thanks so much for the feedback!!

Going through drive through and changing your order at the window
Not being able to wait like 15 seconds at drive order
Tik tok drink
BreannaLyne4 points4y ago
When you're in drive thru and give me the complete order just to tell me it's on separate checks after it's been sent through or at the window.
Speeding past the speaker. I don't care if you have a mobile order or if you didn't see it. You've been in a drive thru before, right?
Asking if we have something at the window after I told you we don't at the speaker. Why would I lie about something so simple.
General whining about an item you want that we're out of. I can't make it appear.
And that's just what comes to mind right now.
StillKnockers1 points4y ago
Our drive thru is a jacked up, confusing hot mess, that even partners have speed past the speaker in. When I live, Starbucks are all shoved into awkward locations with little to no parking. We have parking, but it takes a minimum of three turns to get INTO our drive thru. That’s IF the sign directing you to the drive thru doesn’t confuse you.
deprellis3 points4y ago
Ordering off the secret menu frappes when we're busy and relatedly, showing me the phone with the recipe instead of reading it to me (I can't look at 2 screens at once!).
blonderthanbefore [OP]1 points4y ago
Oh my lord that’s annoying. Thanks!!
musiconthewind3 points4y ago
“I’ll take two caramelmacchiatofrappuccinosextracaramelamochawithsoyandthreepinkdrinksliteice.”
1. Talking faster than I can write on cups 2. Can’t do one of those drinks. 3. Sizes? 4. Hot or iced? 4. All that plus modifications = going over the order multiple times and customer getting mad.
Slow down. Give us time. If you want an accurate order try and learn the correct way to order. Tbh if you don’t give a size at my store we’ll automatically try to sell you the biggest one.
fairygames343 points4y ago
When it takes longer than 2 minutes to make their drink and they start asking where it is to "make sure it didn't get lost". We're a busy store in a busy mall, your drink is on its way jfc
blonderthanbefore [OP]3 points4y ago
patience, people. thanks for the feedback!
blonderthanbefore [OP]2 points4y ago
Yes! I remember one time I ordered and forgot to give a size and then was very confused when I was given the biggest size. I thought about it and realized why wouldn’t they try to sell me the largest most expensive size if I didn’t specify? Thanks for the feedback!
sosaidsmudge2 points4y ago
I don’t care what you order as long as you order it properly. Just start with the size, tell me if it’s hot or iced, what the base drink is and give me the modifications slowly instead of in one breath.
But if you order a water at the handoff or anything at the DT window you didn’t say at the box, you are dead to me.
blonderthanbefore [OP]1 points4y ago
I feel like it just makes it easier for everyone to go through the order one thing at a time because then there is less confusion and unnecessary irritation by the snobby customer when they have to repeat their order bc they said it faster than anyone could comprehend. Thanks for the feedback!
pansexuatarian2 points4y ago
When you tell a car to order when they’re ready. They sit there for five minutes. Then yell, “HELLO”. Like, I told you to order 5 minutes ago. But you just sat there.
blonderthanbefore [OP]2 points4y ago
I swear some customers are trying to be annoying thanks for the feedback!
blonderthanbefore [OP]1 points4y ago
I will never understand some people’s logic. People going out of their way to be inconsiderate is just mind blowing
