Still questioning if this is okay and legal? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by jessimarie97
Awhile I made a post about a problem I was having with a few of my shift supervisors and manager and DM. Well most things have improved enough for me to keep my mouth shut. However, I still get locked out. Like today, I was scheduled to be there at 430am got stuck at a red light, pulled in at 431, they were already inside and doing their thing and wouldn’t let me in so I texted my shift at 432 “Hey, I’m here, let me know when you can let me in” no reply back. So I wait and wait. Then I finally at 450 just go wait by the doors and I’m finally let in at 455 to clock in. How is that ok? If my shift had been two minutes late due to traffic it wouldn’t have been that way. Or any other coworker no working an open shift it wouldn’t have been that way. But my manager and district manager say we have to keep the door locked because of safety reasons. I just want to know what actions to take. I know I was still late and I’m aware but I wasn’t 30 minutes late and then my shift was talking to me like I’m consistently late like that but it’s only because she locks me out if I’m not there by 425 usually. It’s just frustrating.

For safety reasons, policy is that once the opening baristas enter the store, the doors must stay locked until the store is ready for business(i.e. the cash is properly secured in the drawers and safe). However, all partners should be entering the store together, so I would question why your shift is entering the store before all partners are present.

I would go to r/legaladvice and talk with your district manager if the problem persists. I get technically, you are late. But they are intentionally ignoring you and preventing you from being on the clock.
I don't know how badly you need this job, but I would have gone home if this happened more than once. If they want to be petty about times, they can work without me.

I'd be screwed if my store did this. I'm constantly 3-6 minutes late (despite my best efforts) when I open. If I knew I'd be locked out at 5am on the dot and would have to watch them try to do set up one person down, I'd laugh my ass off.

You should talk to your DM. You'd get in less trouble for being one minute (or 5) late than your shift would for obviously keeping you from getting paid while you are there!

I’ve never had this happen? I used to work at 5 am and my store opened at 5 am. I would be there at 4:45 to get a coffee to what not and they always let me in.
