Ah, I feel like a jerk now. I wasn’t trying to make you feel bad in that other post, and I did edit my reply to be more helpful after I thought about it.
Feeling out of place in any new job is normal. It’s not you or any sort of flaw in your personality, it’s just life.
Also, in coffee shops, we’re very often just waiting to see if the new hires are willing to work or if they’re just playing around. You’d be surprised at the number of people who think working at Starbucks must be super easy and relaxing and just, like, soooo fun all the time. Those people won’t have fun and will eventually just peace out, but until then other partners have to pick up their slack, which is frustrating especially considering how understaffed we are.
Considering how new you are, it’s really likely that the other baristas are just waiting to see what kind of worker you’ll turn out to be. That’s why I try to gently redirect any new hires who are gung-ho over novelty Frappuccinos. That’s a very green bean, non-barista obsession, and making tons of “secret” recipes all day suggests that you’re not actually interested in the inner workings of a coffee shop.
Again, I’m not saying that any fault lies with you, but that could be a reason people are standoffish right now. Are you just as enthusiastic about the repeatable routine and doing your assigned tasks to the best of your ability? If you are, just give them time to realize you’re willing to be a member of the team. If not, why not? Do you feel undertrained? Do you have a supervisor you feel comfortable talking to and asking for feedback?
