Is it okay to correct other baristas? (Especially ones that have been at the store longer than me?) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by windedleaves
A customer ordered an iced coconut milk mocha macchiato, and a fellow barista made it with mocha instead of white mocha. I’m very new to the team (I just finished training), so I’m too scared to like say anything. I don’t want the customer to get something that’s made incorrectly especially because the drinks are pricey, but I also don’t want my coworkers to not like me. Is it okay to say something if something like this happens again? Thanks!

Phrase it like a question. "Omg I thought that came with white mocha, am I just dumb?!?!" If they argue, pull up a recipe card "to verify", "I could have sworn it was white mocha!"

Phrase it as a question- but yea no harm saying anything unless your team is full of dicks

With a menu as big as ours, and with so many customizations, I don't think it's a problem to correct fellow baristas. If I make a drink wrong, I hope people would correct me. But of course there's a way to say it. I wouldn't worry too much about correcting, as long as it isn't condescending :)

I made CMMs wrong for like a solid year before someone corrected me on the amount of WM that goes in.
Definitely say something, but dont think of it as correcting, think of it as coaching. It will definitely catch your manager's eye. It's a learning experience for both people - don't be afraid to be wrong, approach with good intent and treat your partners with dignity!

It’s totally fine if you’re nice about it. I had a newer barista berate me for making a drink “wrong” when really it was just sitting out for a couple minutes (cold foam cold brew).
Another time I was double bar and I set my pitcher for a Frappuccino somewhere to finish up a different drink, as I was waiting for ice.
M-me
NB-Newer Barista
NB: you’re out of sequence
M: I am? Oh well. I just set that pitcher there to finish something
NB: well since you’re out of sequence we’re behind on drinks
M(mutters to self): we’re behind drinks because no one who isn’t on bar cares enough to get ice
I really am okay with people telling me how to do things. But if you want to be in my face telling me how I don’t know how to do my job that’s another story. Just don’t be a dick about it. No one, whether they’ve been there the same time as you, before, or after, wants to be talked down to. My old SM always did this to me and it pissed me off so much

if you were trained properly (which by the sound of this instance, you were 👏🏻 ), you have fresh knowledge of recipes, and if your coworkers have gotten into poor habits that could lead to a slippery slope. as spill-that-tea-sis mentioned I’d suggest posing it as a question and learning opportunity ~

stay on the side of caution to be safe. remakes suck :/ no one told me one of our faucets didn’t give hot water so i sent a cold americano by accident. lady comes back a minute later and she wasn’t mad but it backed up everyone else :/
