Training A Green Bean To close on short staff? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Marinseya
I am a FRESH barista trainer, like, I came in and did my training and then 2 hours later my first green bean shows up. Shes been doing really well, but we are SUPER short staffed and she hasn't even fully finished cold bar TR after a week and a half. (Weve been trying for 3 days)
Tomorrow I'm teaching her how to close for the first time, and our preclose leaves an hour and a half before we actually close, leaving just me, my ssv and my green bean.
Any advice for training her? I dont want to just stick her on dishes, though I may have to, because she doesn't really learn much from that.

I CONSTANTLY asked my green bean what to do when we closed.

When he first showed up, I explained the closing procedures in between customers. Then, I’d randomly ask him how to break down machines. Or have him point out which dishes need to be washed. Or the order in which to do things.

I had a few extra nights with him because he is a minor and my SM figured he could benefit from a little extra help. The first night I had him sweep and mop and do trashes, then I had him break down espresso machines, then I had him do dishes, then he led the close and told me how I could help him.

I’m not an official barista trainer so don’t take my advice too hard if it’s incorrect. My advice would be to let them know they’re in control, whether they like it or not. They’ll have to be on their own soon and as much as it sucks to be thrown in, the best thing you can do to prepare them is go over everything a million times over.

That's actually wonderful!!!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!! I'll definitely put that into action when I train. My green bean is also a minor so I'm hoping I get a little extra time, too.
Also I think you'd be a fantastic (official) barista trainer from the advice you gave me!!!!!!! It sounds like you're already great at teaching people and coaching them.

Thank u!!! I’m only four months in so my SM won’t let me be a trainer yet but she said as soon as I hit six months she wants me to be one!! I’m in school to be a teacher so I take every opportunity I get to help anybody I can learn and grow. I also really love my job and want people to come in and learn to love it just as much as me. <3 Good luck!
