Had a breakdown at work... What can I do to learn drinks faster?(self.starbucksbaristas)

Green bean here. I started working at a Starbucks around three weeks ago. Had my training, 1 day of it was solely drinks. After training, I didn't have any shifts for a week and a half, and since this post, I've had four shifts (ranging from 5 to 8 hours). I've been pretty good at drivethru, and I finally got stellar at front register! But last shift, my manager wanted me to be front register AND start trying to make drinks.

I've been very stressed. I take college classes in the summer and it's currently finals. I also got recently broken up with my bf who apparently unknowingly had his mentally ill sister who has to go into surgery to remove a tumor and the doctors do not know if it is cancer. I ended up just crying in the back because my manager seemed to get frustrated with me the fact that I couldn't even make one drink. My brain was in a fog. I ended up just clocking out early and crying in the parking lot. I thought about quitting because I only took this job to learn how to make drinks so one day I could make my own drinks when I open a cat cafe (my absolute dream). I think my manager had a bad day and took her frustration out on me, because there is NO way she should expect me to know how to make drinks fast or correctly having only been here for a few shifts.

I haven't even had TIME to sit down and study the drinks until now. I'm such a visual and tactile learner that reading a card with the recipe just doesn't click with me. Are there tutorials online for how to make drinks? Where I can SEE the drink getting made? Any other helpful tips...?

Thanks :(

What i did was I studied on quizlet but what helped the most was writing out the sequence in bullet points
For example: say someone’s order comes out and they want a grande nonfat 3 pump vanilla latte -sticker cup -grab milk, pour to grande line. Steam for 5-6~seconds -cue shots. -pump syrup -catch shots in cup
Grab second cup in line -prep cup and milk pitcher.
Then I could imagine the first drink was done. And sequence the second drink on paper
I wrote it out completely! Id even specify the number of pumps.
So basically I studied the components of Hot V cold drinks and different kinds such as latte v flat white v macchiato etc... then when I got the basic gist of that I wrote out the sequencing in action over and over, that way when I was thrown on bar as a new partner I could say the sequencing to myself! Just as I walked through it on paper!

Ahhh okay!!! Thank you! So visualizing the sequence and writing it down in bullet points was the best for you! I will try that too :)

I’m a shift supervisor and have been working for the company for about a year and nine months.
Drink making doesn’t come easy. You probably won’t be super strong until 3 months in. I’ve looked into tutorials and gaming things to help train but there really isn’t much tactical training without being there and making the drinks. You can find quizzes on quizlet or other flash card quizzing but that’s the best I’ve found.
With your specific situation, I would say it was a mix of a stressed out manager and a lot of personal stuff that all came to hit at once.
Overall, my suggestion is to just take it slow. Make sure you are breathing through it all and don’t let others pressure you to be better. You’re just starting out and you’ll start connecting drinks together once you take your time and perfect your bar skills.

Thank you so much for the kind words. 💕 I am just trying to be optimistic, not take it personally, and finally I have some time to sit down and study the drinks with a guide I made. I completely agree that the best way anyone can learn is just by making them. I’ll definitely look into the quizlet stuff and flash cards, thank you!

I was a barista before starting at Starbucks for over a year, so when I started bar at SBUX it was challenging, but probably not as challenging as if I hadn’t done it before. First things first, don’t take on more than you can at once. When you’re new and start picking up 2-3 drinks you’re going to get messed up and flustered. That takes months of practice. Do one drink at a time, don’t worry about being slow at first because as my manager says, making the right drink is more important than being fast right now. You need to learn the basics before you pick up speed.
For me, I studied quizlet a lot and also asked for more bar time at night. I’m still learning certain drinks (the cold foam... omg I hate it) as I’ve only been there a month, but things are getting easier for me. If you’re on bar during peak and you get flustered, ask for help and slow down. Take a deep breath. Being new at a place as busy as Starbucks can be very overwhelming, but your partners expect that you will need some assistance for the next few months. If anybody gives you attitude about helping you, that isn’t cool.
Your manager could have just been having an off day or maybe she was flustered from other stuff. I’ve had issues with some of my coworkers having a bad day and taking it out on me. Try not to take it too personal. If they get really bad then don’t be afraid to say something to either them or someone you like there/can trust for advice on how to handle them, just say “I understand that you’re frustrated but you don’t need to get mean with me. Is there something I can do to help you?” Something like that. Don’t escalate the situation but don’t let people get away with it either

Thank you so much for the extremely helpful advice. I have a huge issue with not being patient enough with myself and hating making people wait.

And yes! I've just been studying nonstop since yesterday and I feel like I got the hot bar down in theory, writing things down like the rules like 1-1-2-2 for shots, 2-3-4-5 for pumps, etc. etc. really helps. Downloading the recipe booklet I found online really helps too.

I really do think it was an off day. She completely forgot I was in the midst of finals and many other personal issues were happening, but she was trying to be as helpful as she could after I was crying in front of her lol.
