Partners who were never trained, how’d you do it?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by YaBoiCorbin
I was hired on about two months ago and only had three nights of training before my trainer was unable to continue working. Turns out 3 other partners in my store had the same experience when they were hired. I guess my question is, how common is this? And how did your first month go?

I worked in a licensed store in an airport that was constantly understaffed and had no official trainers and was pretty much thrown in headfirst, expected to learn as I went. They had me “barista certified” on day three. I spend every minute of downtime I had at work studying the recipe cards, writing down patterns (shots/pumps/frap pumps/etc.) and their exceptions, and read about coffee when I wasn’t at work (I read about things like the difference between the roasts, brewing style, even the growing process). I also downloaded the Starbucks app as a way to learn about drinks and their recipes when I wasn’t at work and didn’t have access to the cards. It helped a TON, but experience is still the best teacher. Don’t be afraid to ask questions as you go, be patient with yourself when you make a mistake, and always connect with the customers. Good luck!!

Thanks for the tips! I did end up reading the entire beverage manual twice but I think having a complete cheat sheet for syrups and shots would help a lot.

Oh I just sucked for a while and now I surprise myself every time I’m on bar and don’t fuck up:)

Hahahahahahahaha. Im a shift supervisior, have been for 3.5 years. Was hired four years ago. I was never trained as a shift or a barista. Our "training store" sees about 1600 transactions a day easily. I closed my first training shift (10am - 12am). I learned and adapted as quickly as possible. Took my about about a week to feel comfortable with the pos system (constant screaming at me for mess ups), 2 weeks to be ok with drive through (so much anxiety), was good at closing within a month, and didn't learn bar until 2 months in. I was literally thrown into hell and learned while constantly being berated by shifts/customers. I eventually helped open a new store and stand as one of the best partners (according to my manager who rants to me all the time). Starbucks has been a crazy experience for me. Depending on your store, you learn or you leave.
My old store sat on a 98% turn over rate, im not dicking with you. When I got promoted within 6 months (because of the turnover rate) my DM and SM sat down with our broken shift team to come up with ways to prevent turn over. Nothing came out of it.

Sounds like Starbucks. I’ve learned it’s pretty much sink or swim

My trainer quit in the middle of my training because my manager kept interfering with it. So I kinda just sucked until I got better??? I don’t know what exactly changed tbh but I can hold my own on bar now.ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ

I work in a target Starbucks and got hired with my best friend during their seasonal hiring time. Supposedly she had one person train her and I was supposed to have another person train me but I never worked with her so every time I had asked my friend how something went, she’d be the one to tell me because she was actually being trained. I had to learn through trial and error and lots of embarrassing situations. I didn’t know we were assigned specific trainers until after 5 months of working there and realized that I wasn’t trained correctly.
