Newbie wants help on register(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by LilKaySigs
Hi I’m a green bean (hired like 3 weeks ago) and I’ve gotten some constructive criticism (from coworker; customers are very understanding) over how slow I am when I’m learning the register. There’s so many buttons and so many combos people order are there any ways I can learn what the hell is going on or what to press?

When it gets slow at my store and there’s a trainee (you may not be scheduled as a trainee but you’re a trainee, no offense, there’s just SO much to learn) I’ll always give them obscenely complicated drinks in a mock order.
“Can I get a.... venti caramel macchiato, make it with soy, extra caramel drizzle, make it iced, add some hazelnut syrup, actually I want it with almond milk, add whipped cream, add cinnamon powder...”
Any time they’re like “woah, okay hold up” I go over and guide them.
It’s weirdly effective.

1 When you have a moment, flick through the menus on the register to familiarize yourself with it
2 if you can't find a button or an item, it may be on a sub-page (brewed teas, draft, etc.)
3 repeat the order to the customer just as it appears on your screen.
4 and don't be afraid to ask your partners for help, they were new once too and should remember what it was like

I got 3 days of “training” and I was put on drive (window/dto, and a week later my own drinks), my trainer was awesome, but it’s never enough. Everyone will tell you that. I was put on front bar 4 weeks in. I work at the starbucks on the grapevine in California. Haha. Sink or swim. Haha

Never be afraid to ask for help! Im almost positive I asked for help on every single transaction until I got it down. We all went through it and it changes a lot so asking will always help! And I agree with other users as well - practice those complicated orders when it’s slow as well as different transactions with gift cards/reloading/etc. Good luck!!:)
