I’m quitting (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by fuckimabaristanow
I have been a barista for 8 weeks now and I’m ready to quit. My location is extremely busy and we serve 80 customers every half hour. Customers are extremely aggressive. I get bossed around like a maid, thrown stuff at me, called names for not knowing secret menu stuff. Multiple times I’ve just cried. The worst part is management.

My supervisor hates me because I’m “laid back” according to him and he dropped a spoon on the ground and he started screaming so I was like “oh are you ok?” And he goes “YOU DONT CARE THAT I DROPPED A SPOON DO YOU????” And then I was like “no! Of course I do! I hear you scream so I wanted to know if you were ok” and he goes “of course I am” then he tells my manager that he dropped a spoon and I didn’t react therefore I don’t care about my job.

Then my manager was having a bad day and threatens to fire me and called me a waste of money because of this spoon incident. Then the next day he comes up to me and says “Sorry I said all those things, sometimes I get stressed and I take it out on whoever is near me. It was you so I decided to say whatever came to my mind hahah” And apparently he apologized because someone witnessed him doing this (cause he did it in front of everyone) and threatened to call HR.

Everyone else at my work is extremely dramatic and there’s so much drama and arguments. Some girl is being accused of insulting a customer when she didn’t even do that. She was just crying in the back.

Then like customers will order egg bites and they don’t get it til half an hour later cause no one ever watches the oven so I was like “oh would you like some help?” And then my supervisor grabbed me and shoved me over to the bar and was like “No. you’re staying here.”

So yeah I’m quitting :)

That’s an incredibly hostile environment. Inform corporate before you go, at least let there be a chance that this will help change things and prevent others from suffering. I highly doubt you’re the only one to feel this way
Dankmoms99 8 points 4y ago
This a thousand times. Tell corporate exactly what you told here. In detail. That is not how a business should be run, how employees should be treated, or how your higher ups should act. When you quit, ask for an exit interview with your DM. I’m truly sorry this was your experience with Starbucks

For the love of pete, call partner resources, or your DM, something, before you quit, or as you quit. That is horrifying.

THIS HOLY HELL!!! This ^^^ is absolutely fucking ridiculous and I am so so sorry. Even if you don’t intend to stay, and I don’t freaking blame you, please please reach out to these resources, or everyone who is working there and will be hired in future will suffer the same things you have. Shoving you is physical abuse, never mind the psychological abuse, complete lack of human decency. I am so freaking angry for you hun, omg. In a good store with a great team this can be such an amazing job, I’m so sorry yours has been so abysmal. Sending tons of hugs and love!!!!

I feel like it could be an amazing job in a different location with a different team. I actually like making drinks and stuff. But I don’t like the other stuff.
Leahwallzorz 7 points 4y ago
The drink making is so fun!! And in a location where you have a slow enough pace to actually get to know your clientele, make those genuine connections with people... that’s the Starbucks I know and love, and my heart aches for everyone on here who has these terrible experiences at stores with abusive management. I don’t blame you one bit for not liking the other stuff. Is there another location near you that you could transfer to maybe? If so maybe go there and have a coffee for here and scope it out, make sure it’s a good speed and happy staff.

Burn that place down and run for it. Yikes

Before you quit, I would urge you, nay beg you, to reach out to your DM. A toxic manager will incite a toxic shift time, will incite a toxic work environment. Their card should be in the store, write them an email about your experience because this is borderline HR stuff and could be a huge headache for them in the future. If not for you but for future partners who get hired. This is absolutely not the culture Starbucks wishes to foster so please reach out, if not for you than for any other poor soul who ends up in this store. If your DM doesn’t care see if you can raise it up the chain of command. At least complete the exit survey and say something. This is not what we’re supposed to be about. 80+ per half hour is a busy store for sure but, not the busiest I’ve seen. I’ve been a borrowed partner at a 120 store and my experience wasn’t great, but not to this level. Your manager is incompetent and can’t handle stress and shouldn’t be in their position.

Starbucks is a wonderful place to work most of the time, that location just sounds horrific. Call corporate and Inform them of this bullshit so the people after you don't have to go through that either!
oversizedsweaterss 4 points 4y ago
We got hired at the same time and my experience has been so much better, not saying that to brag but maybe you could try to go to a different store?
Margaretb90 1 points 4y ago
I’ve gotta say...this sounds like my old store and it was HELL. I recently transferred to a more chill store, though, and it’s truly night and day. I would suggest calling around to different stores and seeing if you can transfer because it’s not like that everywhere.
fuckimabaristanow [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Don’t you have to be 6 months to transfer?
Margaretb90 1 points 4y ago
Nope, I transferred after about four weeks
fuckimabaristanow [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Who did you talk to?
Margaretb90 1 points 4y ago
I first found a store that would accept my transfer and then I just gave my store manager two weeks notice, essentially. She was a bit pissed and said it could take up to 60 days to transfer me (which my current SM said wasn’t true), but she scheduled me longer than two weeks, which was frustrating. But it eventually all worked out and I’ve been at my new store for a couple months and it’s amazing.

What the hostile environment is this
boredomstrikes318 1 points 4y ago
Is it not possible to transfer stores in this situation? (Sorry, this is a legit question. I'm a green bean with the same timing as well)
greencatshomie 1 points 4y ago
You need to reach out to partner resources as well as your DM and inform them of this. Both your shift and your manager are in no place to treat you/abuse you as such. This is not Starbucks.

Before quitting I would ask your DM about the feasibility of transferring to another store/another district. If you have a supportive team, it’s an amazing place to work for.
