Why do managers get proud of running 5.75 shifts when all they’re doing is making all their baristas hangry?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by METAXILLUS
I’d rather stay 15 minutes extra and get an extra break but apparently my shift leaders don’t know how to get this done?
RejectedAmeba9 points4y ago
Because they think they're beating the system. "If I make them for for 5 hours and 45 mins they have to stay on the floor long AND I don't have to give them a lunch. ALL the labor saved!"
METAXILLUS [OP]3 points4y ago
Yeah just ignore the emotional labor!
RejectedAmeba2 points4y ago
Ha! If anyone in upper management at this place cared about emotional labor we wouldn't be having the string of happy hours or have to "make each moment right"
METAXILLUS [OP]3 points4y ago
No they would be actually preparing people ahead of time and encouraging participation with store meetings and training time.
You’re confusing emotional labor with customer service. Emotional labor is the regulation of feelings.
If you work at a Starbucks and being nice is hard for you, you have the wrong job.
If you work at Starbucks and you’re exhausted all day, that’s emotional labor.

Even 6.00 won't net a lunch around here-- I may be mistaken, but I think the rule of thumb here is to have a lunch only if the on-the-clock time equals six hours or more.
I don't get super hungry during my shifts or anything, but I need to be able to take time to decompress even after my 10, so I super value having the 30. I'll always volunteer to work longer if it nets me a 30.
The other partners here think I'm crazy since they'd rather just leave rather than have to spend an extra 30 minutes here just for a break, but eh. We all got different needs.

You must be licensed because corporate changed that last year.
Sammiche1 points4y ago
I'm corporate, and I suspected it was a case of Doin' It Rong(tm). 😐
METAXILLUS [OP]4 points4y ago
The wording is quite clear in the partner handbook.
Either way, anyone who tries to fall back on a rule rather than try to work something out isn’t looking out for your best interests.

Damn, in Ontario, at least, we NEED to take a half hour unpaid lunch if we work more than 4.5 hours. It's so forced upon, it kinda sucks lol.
androgyne_e4 points4y ago
Especially bc I’m disabled and need regular long breaks this pisses me off so much. I get it most ppl in this thread are abled and also can eat fast but I can not!

I've always hated the legalities of break and lunch.

These days I work 9 hours in an office where breaks or lunch isn't enforced. Still, it's a 9-hour day rather than 8 hours.

One thing I hated was being forced to take a break. I'd rather finish a task and have a break be optional at my own desired time rather than an inconvenience managers are forced to enforce.

I don't see the point of micromanaging breaks so long as the work is getting done. If my team mates took 20 minutes to run and bring back lunch, I don't care so long as it wasn't busy as heck.

One hour unpaid lunches are the worst. Oh great, now I'm stuck here near work with an hour to kill.

Ideally, my 15-minute PAID breaks would be combined into a half hour lunch.

Especially these days

I don’t care about your perspective. I want to know why managers think they’re being clever when they’re actually taking advantage of themselves?
Cariboumoo7 points4y ago
Forgive me for trying to start a discussion on the topic.
METAXILLUS [OP]-1 points4y ago
Then it borderline shames me for wanting one.
Cariboumoo2 points4y ago
I thought it was a paid 15-minute break for every 4 hours of work? There's no break at 5.75 hours? Which state?
METAXILLUS [OP]-1 points4y ago
Your discussion is assuming that your system works for everyone else.
NotMyElephants-1 points4y ago
Because halves are disruptive and if your labor is low it becomes harder to keep the shift running when stores busy and you have to 2 person floor it? I don't actually know, but eat before you come in, and eat on your 10, and you shouldn't be hangry.... Maybe its just bc I have kids so Im used to eating quickly, but it shouldn't take 10 minutes to eat a sandwich
METAXILLUS [OP]5 points4y ago
If you have lunches scheduled on three person floors then that’s not a labor problem.
NotMyElephants1 points4y ago
Be a shift then and 2 person floor it, for an hour became everyone needs halves and leave your baristas for a half, while getting swamped..Some days its fine bc we aren't getting slammed, others its hell trying to work out halves bc there's no break.. its really not that serious. If you're hungry eat during your 10. If you can't figure out how to do that, thats a personal issue, its not your SMs fault you're using your 10 to do anything else but eat....
METAXILLUS [OP]4 points4y ago
I can’t eat in ten minutes so you can keep your entitlement.
NotMyElephants-1 points4y ago
🙄 So clever.... It seems like you have 2 choices here. You can talk to your SM, or higher ups about the scheduling and needing more than 10 minutes to eat, fwiw if it is a disability, or anything related, they have to accommodate and give you more time to eat. Or, you can bitch on r/starbucks , which tbh is not productive.
METAXILLUS [OP]3 points4y ago
What it takes me to do on my own time is none of your business.
NotMyElephants0 points4y ago
Jfc, relax a minute. Why so defensive over a ten minute break? Lord, eat something and get over it already.
ellllla_5 points4y ago
To be fair, if the store is busy someone may not get their full 10. I’ve had times when my sandwich wasn’t ready until after my 10 was over, and I had to go hungry. Also, even if the store isn’t busy, depending on what you eat you may have to wait for your food 2 minutes in the oven. There’s not really a one size fits all mold when it comes to this. A lot of people don’t get even ten minutes to eat and a lot of people can’t eat fast enough, even those without disabilities.
Baby_Smokey1 points4y ago
My ten doesn’t start until I sit down and eat.. soon as I’m dismissed for my break I make my own food and sit down.. my 10 is my 10 to relax.. I deserve it dammit😩 might even take an 11😭
METAXILLUS [OP]3 points4y ago
I’m not being defensive, I’m angry that people think it’s ok to dismiss me.
NotMyElephants2 points4y ago
I wasn't even dismissing you, it was a suggestion. But alrighty then.
