How do you handle being on front and oven? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SoftRedNinja
What’s the best sequence to do it like if a customer orders three food items and there’s 4 people behind her. Do I immediately turn around and throw the items in the oven after telling other customers I’ll be right there? I get irritated when someone puts me on both but then chides me when I’m putting food in and there’s customers in line, like what am I supposed to do? Serve everyone in line and then start on food items when there’s no customers? It feels like damned if I do, damned if I don’t.

So usually when the customer orders the food items I’ll ask if there’s anymore food items and then say let me throw those in the oven for you so they’re ready by the time we’re done. Finish taking their order and then if it beeps while they’re still there great, if not it should be done when the next order is over. When it’s busy it’s honestly just a free for all and you have to do what’s best in that moment.
I guess the idea is the stuff for the customer should already be in process by the time they get to the end of the bar. Like their food is in the drinks gone to whoever is handling bar.
Focus on one customer at a time. Hope that helps! (I get overwhelmed easily and have to tell myself to focus on one customer at a time all the time)

Depends on the transition. If they’re paying credit, I grab food as their paying. If it’s through the app or Starbucks card, I have to finish the transition, then let the next customer (if any) now I’ll be with them in a second or something.

Even when we're slammed I try to keep it to: take order, put in food. Take order, put in food. Usually it works out to where the person orders and are paying when the food is ready to be removed and for my store it's almost right behind the register so it's easy to throw it in a bag and throw the next order in while the customers are putting up their money and shuffling next in line.
If they order pike I do it when they insert their card or pull out their wallet because otherwise I usually forget about it 🤷🏻‍♀️
Most of the pastries take literally seconds and usually/hopefully the next customer doesn't even notice much less care.
The one customer at a time mantra is a good one

Thank you! I will do this next time! I had a poor lady waiting after 4 customers for her food because I assumed someone had put the food in but they didn’t

It happens, if they seem a little testy I'll say "Thank you for your patience" or something like that and they usually just walk off lol but better than getting yelled at or belittled. You'll get the hang of it!

Thank you! I’ve been working at Starbucks for a little over a month and doing my best to figure out how to do things.

My manager takes everything that Starbucks tells her as gospel truth, like there couldn’t possibly be another way to do something. So I know for a fact there’s an order taking sequence. Welcome-Mark-Gather-Tender-Thank

So before you start the next guest you need to make sure the previous guest order is started. I usually just tell the person who buffalos their way up to the counter I’ll be with them in just a minute.

Side note, I love the people that wait to be called on to approach the register. Unless you’re on your stupid fucking phone not paying attention
