Am I Wrong To Be Excited? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by PiscesPrincess31
Today was my first day as a barista. I did some training in Customer Support, and helped on making food and prepping. I’m really excited and looking forward to what the future holds, however, I see all these posts on Twitter and Reddit about how the job sucks and how “corporate doesn’t care” and it’s literally the worst job in the world. The people at my store are super friendly and nice, and they were accepting and supportive of dumb little me trying to grind coffee beans. We had fun, and my trainer was really cool. Plus, the benefits are some of the best I’ve ever seen for a job like this, and I’m stoked to finally get health insurance.

I know that the “honeymoon phase” is going to wear off, and sometimes it’ll be hell, but I feel like I’m being naive and stupid for being excited about the first job that I actually like doing. Maybe I shouldn’t let others experiences influence how I feel, but it’s hard when it’s all you hear about.

If you're excited, stay excited. Negativity of others can be upsetting, but your enthusiasm can be just as infectious. Post positive interactions. It's nice to read.

I've been a partner for years and my mood varies day to day. But Im friendly with most of my coworkers. My store manager is great and treats us well. I love my regulars.

Stay positive! Your team may start picking it up too.

i think for the most part working at starbucks is good but there are always rough days like if someone doesn’t show up or if you’re slammed all day or you close and get out 30 minutes late. so when people post rants it doesn’t mean that they dislike their job it just means that their day was rough.

I absolutely love working for Starbucks! But yes some days do suck I’m not gonna lie to you. It’s great that you have a good store!! You’re not being naive you’re being positive and that’s wonderful! I’m so excited for you, just keep that attitude and remember that customers suck sometimes but that doesn’t mean you do!!

I use to be like you. Just wait a month or until a rude customer yells at you and calls you incompetent.

Now the only thing that gets me through it is the free drinks on shift, my nice regulars, and my coworkers. I’ve never bonded so quickly with a group of people. We joke and swap stories about asshole customers, and when the store is dead we experiment making random ass drinks. Becoming friends with them makes the job so much easier. You will get customers that are gonna be so incredibly rude to you, but just remember as soon as they leave you and your coworkers get to make fun of them 😂

But seriously, it can be an awful job, just hang in there on the tough days because some days will be miles worse than others.

i started a couple months ago and I still love this job after being thrown into the trenches of hell. There’s good and bad days and days you’re gonna want to quit, but tbh that’s gonna be any job. If you truly have a passion for it, it’s gonna be the best job in the world. I love when I make a customers drink and I get to see their happy face as they walk out and know they have their coffee in part of their routine. I love getting to make genuine customer connections with our regulars and knowing their drinks. It just depends on who you are as a person. Not everyone is cut out for this job and it’s tough but honestly I love it and it’s so much better then where I was before.

Stay excited. Sounds like you have a good team and management which is one of the most important aspects of this role. You are learning and developing new skills and performing work you enjoy. You are still reaping in the fruits of your labor and are looking forward to further development of this career and your skillset. After the honeymoon phase, you'll get more situated and comfortable and there may be years of joy found in the hard work. Who knows, you may never burn out if you truly enjoy the job.

To furher explain the sense of burnout:

Employees tend to burn out when there is nothing more to get out of the job. Self-development and skillset has ceased and it just feels like it's time to move on. As we spend so much of our waking life at work, it is a part of life the derives some of the biggest feelings of meaning, purpose, and fulfilment.

To repeat what I had said in another thread: I believe the problem here is the detachment from the work. People enjoy performing well in good meaningful and rewarding work. The best example is set me on a plot of land in minecraft and I'll have a wheat farm up and running in no time. Or give me a backyard to garden on and I'll tend to it all day long. My co-workers often discuss a video game called Destiny 2 where they work together to achieve awesome items. (Funny the thought of a bunch of fat lazy dudes sitting on their arses all day long living vicariously as epic heros who run around all day) The Starbucks gig should serve some purpose (As well as extra cash) for a good while but there is no doubt I may inevitably burn out after the same job day after day without any progression. At least when it comes to real hands-on work, we see the fruits of our labor.

Bottom line for much of us: The work is no longer gratifying. Man was made to work. The quality of life is so insanely good these days that most of us can only derive meaning from our jobs and hobbies. Back in the day, we had to put forth a lot more effort to stay alive and the fruit of our labors were more evident. ie: "I just killed this boar and brewed this mead. Now we feast and drink!"

I wish you the best of luck. Just remember life is an ongoing adventure and times will bring change. You will learn and grow and that could lead you anywhere. And remember: Alcohol is addictive. Numbs the senses. Fucks with the dopamine-reward system and makes meaningful tasks far less meaningful.

Cheers mate! :D

I've been working for about 6 months. It's my favorite food service job that I've had. Honestly, a positive attitude goes a long way. It's important to try to find the parts of the job that you enjoy. I really like bar, and I'll usually spend whole shifts making drinks. I don't like reg, so I avoid it. Hopefully you've got a good team! Starbucks can be a really fun job, even with the bad days.

Be excited.
The job is rough for sure.
BUT the good days are the best days.
I have regulars that I couldn't survive my shift without. It's hard at times and stressful but genuinely love making drinks and handling the right customers.
Please try to stay confident and confident in your work.

Honestly. It has its ups and downs like any job but a lot of it has to do with your own mentality and your store.

I’m on my fourth store, and I’m currently still in the honeymoon phase after almost 2 years. (237**** shift supervisor here!) but I wasn’t always. I started as a barista at a small cafe store and made friends so quick, I met my current girlfriend who was my shift and my manager was the coolest thing ever. Coming to work every day was fun, and I was excited.

And then we got a new manager. This new manager came in and completely redid our store, was very passive aggressive, and caused 12 out of 18 partners to leave. I left and went to a drive through store with my best friend. At first, it was a blast. But the manager was never there, the shifts were bratty, and it just turned into a place to dick around. Standards weren’t followed, teas weren’t shaken, drinks were made improperly all the time and without care. All the shifts were under 23, and it showed. After a year and a half, I left. I was so unhappy and I needed a break.

So i took a break, and then decided to come back a few months later. I got hired as a shift at a store that had NO manager. She was on a sabbatical for 6 months, and I got hired 4 months in. I had no clue what I was doing as a shift, and none of the other shifts wanted to help. There was a particular shift who was bullying me, and targeted me so much that I dreaded coming to work. She was harassing me, assaulting me, and spreading rumors about me after I had only been there for a month. Eventually I reached out to my DM and they decided to transfer me and open an investigation against this shift because I was the *third partner she had done this to, transfer and all*.

So I transferred, and I have never been more in love with my store. I love to shake teas, and make each frap individually. I jump at making customer connections, and I’m so so happy. My shifts and i are in a huge group chat with our manager and we actually talk to each other, send memes and have a great relationship. We’re a super high volume drive through store, so it gets crazy but everyone there is super grounded. I look forward to coming in, and I love my partners so so much.

Kind of a rant, but just remember that your mentality and your surroundings play a huge part. If you have a great store, appreciate it !

I started about 6 months ago and I’m still super happy and excited. My favorite part is meeting all the new people that come through and learning more about regulars. Stay excited it really shows to your customers and employees(especially your boss)

People come here to post about the worst things that happen. A lot of the people who post have been with the company for years and have a plethora of experience in all situations. These horror stories don’t happen everyday, but unfortunately at some locations, the bad outweighs the good. I love my coworkers, I genuinely have a good time at work usually, and I love my regulars and that I’ve created connections with strangers. But there are are many things I hate. There are many times I want to walk away. And honestly pretty much with any big business, corporate does not care about us at the lower level actually making the business what it is. That’s just how it is. Some days are a nightmare to get through, but you get through it every time. This job is honestly what you make of it but you should know and will learn that working with the public sometimes sucks. Bad. But it’s good to hear that you’re so excited! You’re gonna get a lot of new experiences and feel like you’ve been through it all and it’s definitely a job where you learn a lot.

I feel like a lot of us have a love-hate relationship with the job. I’m thankful I’ve got all the experience and skills it’s taught me.
