question about hours from a teen green bean!(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by zoinks411
hey guys! I'm starting out my second week as a barista and I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out how many hours I should do over the school year since summer is almost over. I'm not sure if this helps but I'm planning on taking like 6 APs next year but really do want to keep this job over the school year.

I’m in college, but I did 15-20 hours and that was a lot sometimes. I would recommend staying around 10. Maybe 2 or 3 days a week?

Thank you!! I think I'll definitely make sure to let my manager know I can do max 3 days a week.

Personally, I would limit your hours to 5-15 during the week. Working during school with that many APs can be really stressful, so I would recommend either only working on weekends (fri-sun) or working 3 days a week to have weekends free. Chances are a manager will want you to work at least 1 weekend day though. Good luck this year!

from someone who worked a lot during school, take this from me. do what is best for you. maybe work 10-15 hours a week. that could be two shifts during the school week and then one slightly longer one on the weekend. no matter what, work with what YOU are comfortable with. if you want, I'm sure your manager would be willing to work with you on how much you work. you could start with fewer hours, and if you get more comfortable, ask for more. or vise versa, start with more and shorten them as you need.

thank you so much for the advice!! I think I'm going to start out with fewer hours and build my way up and switch things around, just to see what I'm comfortable with.

I def suggest building up. I was working so, so much and it was so, so bad. I wasn’t even taking AP classes.
I hope everything goes well for you!

thank you, you're so sweet! I'm glad your hours are (hopefully?) improving. I'm so excited to work this year!

oh I left that place a few months ago. I’m actually (hopefully, waiting on background check) gonna be working for SBux this year! working with school is def a good idea, but you HAVE to be sure not to overdo it. do what you’re comfortable with. it’ll be some of your best times, as long as you don’t overwork yourself school & work wise :)
as long as you do what’s best for you and take care of yourself, I’m sure you’ll love working & everything will be great :)

I'd recommend working weekends and maybe one weekday. 8-15 Hours and make sure the weekday is a lighter school day.

I’m a teen and have been working 20-25 hour shifts but in the school year I plan to lower my availability to about 15 hours. I would say somewhere between 10 and 15 hours is good
