Manager is lying to me, how would you react? (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hi,

I started working about 2-3 months ago in Switzerland. I was still in my probation period when I got a job offer in the US. I told my manager 2 weeks in advance that I have to leave. He was really disappointed and mumbled that I have 7 days in advance to quit, thats the Swiss law during probation period. He then asked me to give him the date when I have to leave, I told him the date and he said that is not alright. He suddenly told me I need to work off all of my dates where he scheduled me until early August, but I already have to be in the US this Friday. Furthermore, he told me I have 1 month notice period and he already did me a favor that he only scheduled me only for early August, otherwise I would get into trouble with the law, and that is not something he wants for me.

I called HR and they told me my contract says I have 3 days notice period and that everything is alright, I could leave. He knew it for sure, he went from 7 days, to one month, to guilt tripping me that I have a better job offer. Tomorrow would be the last day, I am sure he is going to make it really bad for me. Would you call him out on that? I will not get a recommendation anyways, only a conformation that I worked there from HR.

He doesn't know the laws, he also tells people that they need a certificate from the doctor from day one, even when it is only after three days being sick. Everyone is kind of anxious around him, he is a super perfectionist and kicked people out who already worked for 10 years at Starbucks doing a great job. I really dislike this guy and don't want to go to work anymore.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I wont pretend to know the labor laws in Switzerland, but if you truly don’t feel safe, whether physically, emotionally, or mentally, I wouldn’t go. Your health and well-being are far too important.

Even as a shift/previous GM who hates when people don’t show up for their final days, I don’t support you putting yourself through that if you can’t and I definitely don’t think it’s worth you confronting this person. If you want to stick out your last day and make a little more money, go for it, but from your story it sounds like HR has accepted your notice and you will still get the work confirmation.

I would however take full advantage of any reporting options you have and recommend you fill out your exit survey. Be specific and honest. When you called HR, did you report it as an issue? We have the PCC here in the states, I’m sure you have options for your country as well.

I apologize for my lengthy reply, but I hope all goes well for you. Good luck in your new job!

Thanks so much for your support. I will call in sick for tomorrow, I just don't want to face him again, the whole team is suffering and gossiping about his management style and personality. It makes me really angry that guys like these can do whatever they want and even be successful. Furthermore, I can't believe that somebody is lying straight in your face as a manager only to have less stress and get their way. I apologized for this inconvenience and thanked him for this possibility, but I also have to think about my future and I told him even before I had my Visa to make sure that he will find a replacement. I didn't tell HR about it, I first wanted to make clear that I can leave. You are right, I should let them know about it, people don't want to work there anymore and feel anxious, yet, nobody is doing anything.

I wanted to have a clean and honest exit, but unfortunately it is not possible with this guy.

Thank you :)

I'd ignore him and his pathetic attempts to control your life. You aren't going to listen to him anyway, what can he possibly do to you? You already have the next job going, your next one after that isn't very likely to call Switzerland to confirm employment, they are far more likely to only call the most recent one. But even if they did, you are correct that the only thing they can do is confirm that you were employed there once, along with the dates of employment. You should think about letting HR know what the manager is trying to do to you, in case he does the same to others and they need some kind of paper trail, but don't expect anything to actually change with him or the store. Honestly your best revenge is going to be living your best life in spite of him.

Edit: I also think you should just call in sick for your last day if you have even a tiny HINT that he is going to try to make it miserable. In my experience, even truly horrid managers won't do that once you are on your last day, because they give up by then because it is far too late to change anything. But if you are uncomfortable, why put yourself and your co-workers through that? They'll be better off being down a person than having a very stress-filled day of awkwardness.

I actually did, I also informed HR about this incidence. I had a great team, but he makes everyone sick and tired of his controlling attempts. My co-workers understood fortunately.

I’m sorry you’re going through this too. You’re not getting the recommendation anyway, feel free to tell him that you have called HR and been given the correct information- and that likewise too you can’t cancel your flight or start date anyway, he had ample notice.

My manager at my last Starbucks mocked my two week notice calling it a ‘note,’ and talked me into working a third week, saying otherwise he wouldn’t put in my transfer request. Managers like that are awful, and it’s best to just leave given the circumstances- I would also report to maybe the district manager if you feel up to it. They’re not giving you any benefit, and you already have that job anyway, so it won’t hurt you to say something

Thanks :) I told him today and called in sick for tomorrow, its less money, but I can't bear to see him again :D I am too excited for my next chapter in life. Yes, a good manager makes work so much better. It is a lesson learned.
