Hi guys!! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by bleerywilkes
So I’m a new barista and just finished my training I was wondering, how long did it take you guys to get comfortable with everything? I was a little overwhelmed my first day post training and felt bad for asking everyone on my staff when we were really busy! And sadly we had two callouts so it was even more of a struggle.

6 months that’s what I tell everyone. No matter how fast of a learner you are at 6 months you won’t be asking questions all the time. You will know how to do almost everything, down to the smallest of the things. As a 6 year partner I still ask questions like dates or small things and they are constantly changing things at Starbucks. So it will take time to learn morning mid and afternoon Tasks just by working for a short amount of time. Recipes and the register you will pick up so much faster but this is the easiest part of the job :) there is a lot to learn so be patient with yourself and remember smart people ask questions. :) even if you don’t work all the shifts and you are only a morning or only an evening partner you will take time to learn what is done for each shift not even working it :) good luck! You got this!

So I'm an almost 4 month partner, I would say I started getting really comfortable right around 2.5-3 months, where I'm not having to ask questions about everything and I felt like I knew what I was doing. Now I still do ask lots of questions, but it's typically stuff that is less common and/or I haven't had a chance to learn yet. And keep in mind, even experienced baristas often have questions!

Everyone is different. I caught on pretty quickly and it became second nature about 3 months in. Before I left I trained a few. One girl was struggling for months, another guy got that hang of it around 4. There was one who never really caught on and we kept him on the register.

honestly probably 3 or 4 months and even then there were some things i couldn’t remember. but you will be able to remember everything at some point. it just takes time

Experienced barista here. You'd think I'd pick it up without issue but the way Starbucks runs things and butchers drinks is heart-breaking.

Our baristas don't even use frothing knives. A latte is a work of craftsmanship, god damn it.
