I just started and I’m overwhelmed (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by galaxyd1ngo
I’ve been at Starbucks for leas than two weeks now. I had an awesome trainer, and my training week was really well structured.

I’ve had a couple real shifts now, and I’m feeling really overwhelmed when it comes to bar. My last shift, a coworker took a 10 and suddenly there were 8 drinks ordered. I learned how to sequence in training, but easier said than done 😔

I understand the 2-3-4 and 3-4-6-7 concepts, but I always second guess myself and panic and need to ask before I do anything. Is there an online version of the recipe cards I can study at home? I’d like to ask the manager if I can take a deck home if we have extras, but I haven’t seen her since I started.

Do you guys have any tips to help make the recipes click?

Writing down important information like shots in drinks, syrups in hot drinks, syrups in cold drinks, syrups in macchiatos, etc will really help!! The most helpful thing to do is to just keep making drinks with confidence because they can always be remade.

It’s gonna take some time before you feel comfortable and that’s normal. Most people say it’s a three-month learning curve, but I’m about a month in from when I started training and I feel way more confident in my skills, but I think that’s because I was thrown into solo bar from my first shift, and almost every shift after that. With practice it will start to be familiar in no time! I’m sure you’re already fantastic.

Thanks! I’m trying my best, and while my trainer and supervisors say I’m doing fantastic, it doesn’t feel like it :( But I can be hard on myself in situations like this.

Me too! My shifts were encouraging but if you don’t believe it yourself then it’s really not helpful. One day things kinda clicked for me and I felt like i was doing fantastic, which actually made me bar better because I believed I could do it! It’s so hard to get into that space (the days after that I felt burnt out but I’m still excited to know I’m capable of it) but I’m sure it’s gets easier each and every shift you have! Even partners that have been there years make lots of mistakes and started out the same as us! It’s a really really demanding and stressful job; you should be impressed with yourself just for surviving each shift, imo!

You seem like you have it down though, you just may have to take an extra few seconds to process. I knew all the pump and shot numbers but would all of a sudden forget once on bar. Sometimes it just takes a sec to click.

But honestly I would write stuff down or just quiz yourself. Whatever helps you learn :) (flash cards, making a chart, saying it out loud)

That’s what happens to me, I get the sticker, stare at it for like ten seconds and usually ask the nearest person “how many shots?” “this is three pumps right?”

That’s totally okay tho :) sometimes we just need a refresher

When I first started I found a couple flash card sets on quizlet, so I’d recommend checking there! :)
