I hate plastic but I love cold drinks. Help.(self.starbucksbaristas)

Hopefully this is the right place for this type of question! If I was to order a cold drink, could I ask for it to be made in one of the paper cups normally used for hot drinks? I know there’s probably lines on the plastic cups that baristas are probably trained to use when making cold drinks, and I’d hate to make it harder on them. But I just hate using plastic cups and straws. Also, I would ask for no lid since that’s plastic too. So I guess my question is, how much of an inconvenience would it be to make iced drinks in the paper cups instead? I’ve thought about just asking for a paper cup and no lid at my local SB, but I know the baristas will probably just be polite out of habit and I want to know if I’m actually making their job more difficult or not.

Well, the best choice if you want to avoid wasting plastic cups would be to get a reusable one. However, most iced teas and refreshers are made in a shaker so they could probably be put in paper cups, but with the venti size it would be difficult since iced ventis are actually larger than hot ventis. For Frappuccinos, we’re taught to measure the milk with a plastic cup to the line so you might end up wasting a plastic cup anyway if the barista measures this way (as is standard). So, generally, you might be able to get away with it for some drinks at some locations, but the best option would probably be to just purchase a reusable cup. They have cool affordable ones for like $3 at the register.

Yeah I have one of the reusable white ones but it’s one of those that looks like the hot cups so I didn’t know if I could get cold stuff in it either. And sometimes I’ll go on a whim and won’t have it with me :/ But that info is super helpful since I normally get refreshers!

Usually we’ll put whatever drink in whatever reusable cup as long as it fits 😄

FYI the hot drink cups are made with a plastic coating that helps insulate the drink. It really isn’t any better at all. Just ask for the sippy cup nitro lid on cold drinks or no lid at all if that’s what you want

Oh yeah I just looked it up and you’re right. I don’t know why I never noticed the interior was plastic.

The more you know! I highly recommend a reusable cup from amazon. I have one that has a hot lid and a cold lid. Maybe that would work for you?

Yeah I have 2 Starbucks-brand ones but they’re the ones traditionally used for hot drinks. I’m thinking I might just order cold drinks in them :) I just have to remember to bring one with me lol

Oh yeah totally. People do that all the time when I’m on register

It depends how long the barista making the drink has worked at Starbucks. If they’ve worked there for a while it probably won’t be difficult to do in a paper cup. Also, you can buy a reusable cup or bring in your own! It doesn’t have to be a Starbucks branded one! That way you don’t have to worry about any waste at all and you get a 10 cent discount every time you bring it in!

Yeah I’ve always wondered about non-Starbucks brand cups! I always thought that if it didn’t say the oz on the outside, it would make it hard to tell what size to make it, but I guess if drinks are made in shakers or the ingredients are measured in other cups then it wouldn’t matter?

If you know how many oz it is, that’s all that matters! For iced drinks; tall is 12oz, grande is 16, venti is 26, and trenta is 30. For hot drinks, they’re the same except venti is 20 oz, there is no trenta, and there is short which is 8 oz. so just know what size the cup you have is and you can order that size!
