What do you do on your first day as a barista? Also: how strict are they with dress code? (self.starbucksbaristas)

So I just got a job as a barista and my first day is on the 1st of August! What do you do on your first day? I’ve also never worked as a barista (or in food for that matter of fact) so what’s my training going to be like?

And also why is their dress code so strict? Like why do you have to dress so formally just to make coffee? I really wanna wear T-shirt’s, do you guys think I’ll be able to? The person that did my interview dressed soooo formally on both the days I’ve seen her

It depends on your manager for how strict they are with dress code. Some are more lenient than others. Also, you don’t have to dress fancy just slightly nicer.

I just had my first day at the beginning of this month!

My first day was pretty much just 3 hours of going over training, expectations, the customer connection thing, setting up my login and time clock stuff, and doing my food service card certification. That is what took the longest honestly.

I just sat in the cafe and did it on the store laptop.

My training has been pretty easy and slow. I'm a month in and I just started bar last night. Each week I've been doing something new and just practicing on those. I know how to close the store. I'm pretty proficient in drive thru, and support. Now it's just a matter of learning bar.

That sounds really good for you! How long does it take to learn everything? Is it something tough or is it something easy to grip on?

My trainer says she feels like it takes about 6 months to truly get everything down to memory.

But overall aside from Bar the job is pretty simple. I have found once I get into a rhythm I'm actually damn good on DT. My store also really utilizes the headsets and we have a constant stream of communication. So any questions I have I can scream into the void and someone will answer.

So far I've only done one training round on Hot Bar, and played "Good Shot, Bad Shot", tastes hot drinks etc. Its a little bit to get at once, and I have a hard time remembering the number of pumps. But luckily the drink sequencing is on the espresso machine. And the frap sequence is on the inclusion stand.

I feel pretty confident in what I know so far, and have found that even tho I'm tired and have to fight my anxiety I really enjoy the job.

You need to google “Starbucks Lookbook” it has the dress code.

Sorry no tee shirts.

Your first day is called your first sip. Your manager will show you your training plan talk mission and values. Set up your log in and time card.

Your training with look like really depends on the manager. But it is built around doing each different station usually with practice time built in. You work with a barista trainer who shows you the ropes.

The most important thing is to jump in, do things, ask questions. Keep asking them if you don’t know. Your training time is for you, make the most of it.

Slow is steady and steady is fast. It’s all about muscle memory so don’t expect to be fast, work on doing things correct and speed will come as you do them over and over.

Welcome to the team!

Had my first day yesterday, currently on my lunch on my second! It’s super nice, they take you through everything step by step. The first day was all paperwork and coffee tasting— and it’s usually not that long.
