So I am not a “green bean” but I did apply for a SS position and got a call back about setting up an interview. The GM type equivalent did a mini interview over the phone which was all fine and dandy but then she mentioned what the starting pay was and I was like helllllll no. She said that SS starts out at $11.15 (in Wisco for reference and not in the middle of nowhere either), she then went on to say she could talk to her DM for a few dollars more if the interview were to go well and all that. I find it very hard to believe that a massssive company like Starbucks pays its employees that little when I’ve made more working the same damn role at smaller corporations. Was she trying to swindle me or something? Side note: she also said that baristas start at $9 something, again I don’t believe that. If that is the truth then I firmly believe ya’ll deserve far more for what you go through to make my shitty iced caramel macchiato for the basic bitch that I am.

I am a SS in California and I get paid $2.20 more than baristas! That sounds about right.
Devilsgospel1 [OP]1 points3y ago
The difference sounds fine, but the starting for each sounds too low for the work involved. I’m thinking more along the lines of $11-13 starting for barista and $13-16 starting for SS all based on experience. At least that’s how it lines up for most fast casual food service places around here. You’d think a $30B company could afford it.
Edit: Corrected net worth cause idk how to google quick facts anymore 🤷♀️

Yeah, when I was a baristas a few months ago, I was only making like 30¢ over minimum wage. I don’t know what company funds look like - because I know partners get a SHIT ton of other benefits and opportunities that I’m sure cost millions - but on a store level, I know my SM would never be given approval to grant a pay raise like that /: if that SM is able to secure that better starting salary, I’d take it! But it sounds about normal in my experience.

Their excuse for paying us so little is the “total pay package,” where we get all these perks like free coffee, discounts, free subscriptions.

I live in a larger city and our baristas start around $10

I’m from California and it’s 2¢ above our minimum wage. It all depends on where you live and how much the cost of living is
Devilsgospel1 [OP]1 points3y ago
Hmm then I guess those numbers are just about right. Such a shocker that Starbucks wouldn’t pay more.
MommyKinz3 points3y ago
I’m in the MKE area and that is pretty close to the starting wage for shifts here. I’d be shocked if they actually come back and offer more - it’s a pretty set starting rate.
You honestly have to look at the total pay package though - if you’re not going to utilize benefits then the pay isn’t worth it for most people.
Devilsgospel1 [OP]1 points3y ago
Yup yup, kinda figured it wouldn’t be worth it seeing as how I’m not looking to work there long-term enough to reap the rewards. Just looking for something to pay the bills while I finish my degree.

Target in this area starts at $13-15 and they’re pretty much all hiring right now...might be a decent option.

I’m in a city that boasts one of the best cost of living in the nation and starting pay for a barista is $9.87.

Wooof

Yep it’s 9 an hour.

It definitely depends on your location, as well as the company. For example in New York we have a pretty high minimal wage (especially in NYC) but the cost of living is also much higher so they give about a $1.75 raise to shifts outside the city (I can’t speak for in the city as I don’t work there). But I also know that in Pennsylvania their minimal wage is closer to $5 less than ours but hey also have a lower cost of living so I’ve heard shifts only get like a <$1 raise.
You most definitely can try to negotiate the raise, and depending on your SM and DM it can happen.
Quick ninja edit: Baristas in NY get paid minimal wage, so shifts are just above it.

It really depends on where you are . Where I live baristas start at 12$ an hour . That's quite good considering most other places here are minium wage. A lot of you guys complain about the pay , but it's really not that bad and the perks are ABSOLUTELY incredible. Go work at McDonald's and see how bad their pay and staff treatment is. You'll be begging to work for Starbucks again . Trust me -former McDonald's CrewTrainer.

Here in FL its the same amount. I’m experienced but they didn’t need a shift at the moment so I got a barista position. offered $9 and I asked for $10 and got it. You can definitely haggle. This is just a second side job for me, here shifts don’t seem to make much. I initially asked for $12 and they looked at me like ehhhh not gonna happen lol

I’m a barista and we start out at around 9 so that’s very true actually

Ok I have another questions for y'all added to her question. I have a full time job that I work 40 hrs a week. Back in August of 2018 I decided to get a part time job at a licensed Starbucks. Pay was 9.35 an hour. In May.it went up to 9.55/hr. Now that I have a year under my belt and had to deal with the licensed store drama and bs. I decided to apply to corporate Starbucks (standalone ones). Had a wonderful interview. She said baristas starts at 9.50/hr but they are trying to get the pay hire. I said that wouldn't work for me shesike what about 10$ I was still on the fence. She still wanted to offer me the job and said I didn't have to let her know till Monday afternoon if I accept. After my interview Thursday I went back to my car contemplating what just happened. And though I should ask for more money because tbh having the experience 10$ didn't seem enough. I called her and talked to her about 10.50 being negotiable and she sounded fine about it and said she just has to talk to her boss. And to still call her Monday when I decide. But I've been thinking about the whole experience and like glass door it says better 8-11$ is starting it for a barista. And I'm wondering if I should have asked for 11$. I'm still getting paid more with the 10.50$ but I was looking at the averages and mine is still below. Trying to decide if I should haggle with her 10.75 /11$? or just accept the 10.50$? FYI: I would be working 20-25 hours part time. On top of my claims Analyst Job. So I'm not trying to move up to SS position or anything. But with my experience just trying to not be low balled. If that makes any sense at all.. If anyone has any advice for me that would be great. Thank you.
I also live in midtown Atlanta. But for each sub city and city it goes up and down which is crazy to me.
ilovebrandonj2 points3y ago
baristas almost always make just about minimum wage, regardless of experience. honestly i’m shocked she even negotiated a little bit
