Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

TL;DR: I work at a Tarbux and I *think* my manager has crossed some sort of HR line by talking shit about me to customers, and referring to our DM as Hitler, and I need some advice. (self.starbucksbaristas)

So I’ve been at my Tarbux for almost 3 months now, and slowly but surely I’ve noticed my manager is the actual worst. She’s out of retirement, so she’s like in her late 60’s, and when I first got hired my coworkers warned me about her, because I guess the last three hires have quit because of her.

Whenever I’m supposed to be working with her, she always takes off and says she’s ordering things, but yet we’re always out of everything. I wasn’t actually trained by her, but had to pick up a bunch of stuff from my other coworkers on the fly because she never actually took the time to train me on anything, and had me fill out a notebook, making up dates that we did something for the barista training packet. She always leaves a huge mess and breaks things whenever she works.

But here’s where I’m pretty sure some sort of HR line has been crossed:

I heard from two of my coworkers that she’s been talking shit about me, not only to my coworkers, but to our regular customers. She complained about how shitty of a job I did one day when I got called in on my first day off in 8 days (because on three of my days off my coworkers called in sick, and I had worked three 8 hour shifts that week). Granted, I knew I was having a bad day because I was supposed to have that day off, and had stayed out late the night before, and woke up to a call at 8am asking me to come in ASAP.
I really really tried to push past it and have a good day, but I was absolutely exhausted. I understand not being thrilled with my performance that day, but to tell CUSTOMERS that I was “becoming a shitty employee”, is SO unprofessional, especially as a manager!

The next thing that I feel like definitely crossed a line is the fact that when we had a visit from our DM, the next day when she was telling me about it she kept referring to him as “Hitler” and called him a Nazi, which completely rubs me the wrong way since I literally had relatives that were in Auschwitz.

I feel like these violate some sort of HR policy, and honestly if things don’t get better, I’m going to quit, and I know I’m not the only one of my coworkers that feels this way.

Help.

First things first. You need evidence or nothing is going to happen.

Keep a diary as well. It is considered a legal document and in any event dates, times etc. Can help with any sort of HR investigation.
I'm sorry you are going through this. Best of luck!!

Document everything. The dates she’s said these things, time, witnesses. Get your coworkers to sign off on them as well. But most of the time you need evidence. Even if it’s just hearsay, write it down, I’d recommend sending it to yourself in an email so it’s time stamped. But witnesses are key to validate you.

Idk if Tarbucks has the same partner resources as corporate, but you could call them and ask for advice. Or if you know your DM well, you could even ask to have a meeting with them.

I hope things change for you! People tend to quit shitty managers, not jobs. But you could ask for a transfer if nothing else works out

As someone who is a current lead i wouldn't try to go through Starbucks you won't get far there.

Definitely 100% go through HR. Then if that doesn't pan out call the hotline. Use the target resources because they have the power to discipline employees.
