I straight up tell people that Maltodextrin is pure sugar.(self.starbucksbaristas)

For the wealthy skinny white women who show up daily for their Skinny Vanilla Lattes, I won't bat an eye. But when an elderly person comes in or someone explaining they need to cut sugar, I will do my best to tell them maltodextrin has a higher glycemic index than sucrose. (Assuming I have the time and it's not overly busy)

It's heart-breaking to see the overweight fellow try to lose weight on low-carb when they're ordering a Trenta Iced Coffee with Heavy Whipping Cream and 7 pumps of Maltodextrin. Diabetics aren't doing themselves any favors either. Labling this stuff sugar-free is bullshite.

The relationship between insulin response on sf sweeteners is pretty weak, and as long as they’re not searching for extra calories elsewhere because of it, they’ll be fine. They’re way better off adding 7 pumps sf syrup than being told sf syrup is worse and instead opting for classic syrup instead.
I don’t think heavy cream keeps people full at all. Fat in liquid form is very bioavailable to the body and digests pretty quickly. It doesn’t work for me, at least. Additionally the calories pile on so easily that two drinks with heavy cream can easily equal a days worth of calories.

I love the keto people getting grande heavy cream lattes w stevia.
They aren’t doing themselves any favors. Don’t people do research about weight loss and how it works?
Cariboumoo [OP]13 points3y ago
Not that I want to get in a debate, but I will say it's praises. The heavy cream is an excellent appetite suppressant. It is very dense in calories, but in small amounts, it can keep you (fat) fasted all day long.
I was drinking too much heavy cream on keto though. Like 800 calories from 2 large iced coffees. I opted for OMAD or 18/6 and the weight has started to drop again. Not that I would argue for any specific diet.

Yeah but drinking all of your carbs and calories isn’t going to help anyone lose weight if they’re eating meals also... weight loss is about caloric intake not fat intake. If that’s all the person is having, okay fine but if they’re having that on top of other meals chances are they aren’t losing weight.
I also drink too much hwc on keto because it’s so damn good. I restarted today. I struggle most at work. Wish we had better options for keto and things w fewer calories

Fortunately working at Starbucks is pure cardio. Cranking out 9 hour days fasted or on keto and I am finally losing weight. Avoiding heavy cream at all costs. Maybe have it in my coffee once a week at lunch.

Ughhhh I wish I had that willpower! I get so hangry. What do you eat at work? I wanted to start bringing food but I have no way to heat it. So I was thinking just eating the insides of a breakfast sandwich lol.

This isn't quite the same rant but .... I don't understand the people who order 6 pumps of classic and 6 pumps of caramel in a venti iced coffee and also ask for ONE Splenda. What's the point of the one Splenda? Does it make a difference?
Cariboumoo [OP]3 points3y ago
At this point, I think it's just for flavor. Splenda has a profile of it's own.

I’ve been following the keto diet for a year now! I’ve lost 40 lbs. Anyways...
Only the SF Vanilla has maltodextrin. The others use only sucralose which is okay.
If you doing keto, you definitely can get away with doing a tall breve latte, but my recommendation is usually to go for an americano.
I do a skinny mocha americano with a little stevia and a little half and half. No it’s not a mocha latte, but it is keto friendly.
Also passion tea with stevia is very good.
EDIT: Sometimes I do want to explain how Splenda, Equal, and Sweet N Low are not healthy alternatives, but people are so unreceptive to information like that.
TheScrantonStranglr3 points3y ago
mocha isn’t sugar free though
MatchingColors3 points3y ago
Skinny mocha is sugar free though...
TheScrantonStranglr2 points3y ago
that’s what i meant, there’s a reason it’s called skinny mocha and not sugar free mocha like the other sf syrups, it’s not sugar free, it’s less sugar than regular but not sugar free
MatchingColors3 points3y ago
When I looked at the ingredients, I remember only seeing sucralose listed though.
I’ll have to check again!

I straight up tell people nonfat milk has sugar in it.
absolutelyjazzy6 points3y ago
well that’s just not true. at least not in the sense you’re trying to convey. by removing the fat from milk to turn regular whole milk into 2% or nonfat, the total makeup of the milk is concentrated. so the total percentage of sugar will increase but only at a minuscule rate. there’s no added sugar and there’s no reason to avoid nonfat over concerns of sugar intake.
METAXILLUS2 points3y ago
I had no idea! Thanks for correcting me!

Milk naturally has galactose, a type of sugar.
Cariboumoo [OP]3 points3y ago
The yellow Splenda packets contain dextrose I do believe. But as for the health concerns for those alternative sweeteners, you can still lose weight ingesting them. So I guess it's beyond our place to talk about possible health concerns. Still, I do wonder about them.
Alexbran11 points3y ago
i wish our stevia was actually stevia :(
Cariboumoo [OP]1 points3y ago
What is it? I see stevia mixed with Monk Fruit extract.
Alexbran12 points3y ago
Stevia monk fruit and erythritol. Stevia by itself is extremely sweet so you don’t need much. Americans dont have the ability to comprehend change so if we handed them a packet the siZe of a fingernail they’d be mad so they fill it with other stuff to make it the same size as a regular sugar packet

What is maltodextrin and what region of Starbucks serves it? My city does not unless it goes by another name
Cariboumoo [OP]2 points3y ago
It is the primary sweetener used in the Sugar-Free Vanilla Syrup. It is essentially a simpler molecule of sugar that spikes blood glucose faster than traditional sucrose. I see it all over the Midwest United States.
