Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Worked at a Tarbucks for a few months, has my first day at a corporatize Starbucks...... it was a complete nightmare and I cried (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nando409
When I arrived they tossed me into food which was mostly fine because like 80% of the food is the same as Tarbucks, I just had to figure out where the buttons were for the unfamiliar foods and where everything was because they set up was so different. It’s a Monday at 9 am...... it was so busy but hey I survived doing food for 2 hours. But then it went downhill. They put me on customer support and I had no idea what that means and still kind don’t..... they guy “training me” didn’t stick around and I did the best I could to clean and restock things but I had no clue where ANYTHING was. After a few hours one of the other shift leads came in while I was standing there trying to figure out was else to do, no one in line or waiting for drinks, and yells at me because “ I should never not be moving, there are always things you need to be doing and you’re crippling everyone else by not doing it etc.” I’m tired. I’m frazzled. I’m 5 hours in to my 7 hour shift and I finally get to take a 10 min break. I come back and do more customer support and then for the last 39 min this dude thinks it’s a good idea to try and train me on register. I’ve never worked this register before. He shows me one example and LEAVES. A line forms, it’s now out the door. I’m dying. No one is helping me. I’m scrambling to figure out the buttons. It was miserable. What the hell do I do y’all? Hope it gets better? I was so excited to be working at a real Starbucks but now I’m dreading my next day of work. They didn’t even let me do bar today..... which is the one thing that isn’t different from a Tarbucks at all. Help me please

Talk to the manager, take a deep breath, the more you work the easier it gets. Mention to your manager that you do know how to bar and they may let you. It's hard sometimes for a store to have someone new go straight to bar especially during peak (it's incredibly stressful to be baring at 8 am when you're not fully ready to be making drinks) so they just stick them on a less important area so they can focus on getting through the rush. Hopefully you explain this and they will ease up a bit.

Definitely see the store manager see if you can get a better barista trainer or something. That’s insane that you’re going through that.

Your experience is similar to mine and honestly I've learned after going on my hiatus from SB that Starbucks is pretty lawless land when it comes to training and giving their employees proper reassurance. Honestly, if you have another store nearby or so- transfer. You could talk to the GM, you might get extra help but I honestly say transfer somewhere new before the holiday season hits hard. Do Message me if you ever need help getting Customer Support things, and more.

Besides that, there is nothing wrong with you or your work ethic. You are a caring worker and you deserve proper training. You are probably a great barista as well, you just need a better environment to flourish 💗 I know I did.

I know my approach sounds brash and very jumping the gun compared to the others. You could and can take your time at your location. Take the knowledge and lessons (hard or not) from there and apply them elsewhere but DO NOT take anyone's bullshit. It is very easy to do so if you are new but please never let anyone speak to you in a certain tone your mama might give you. It's not professional and not fair.

Wait things out if you'd like for another few weeks or a month, see if things progress; If they do not, then you can always go somewhere new and get retrained there.
Either way, do your best- keep going, but please don't break your back over a company that pays little to nothing for intense labour and has very loose workplace ethics.

I love SB, liked what I did but there are always people in the company who let titles control their being a bit too much.

Thanks so much for your input! I have work Thai morning and I’m dreading it but now I feel a little bit better. I won’t take anyone’s shit and I’ll be sure to ask questions and won’t get steamrolled. I think I’ll wait it it for another two weeks and if things are still terrible I will try and transfer to a different store. Thanks!

Omgoodness that's awful! I would definitely talk to your manager. You could also try explaining to your trainer that you don't know as much as he seems to think you do. He should be giving you the full training, not just an example and then throwing you to the wolves.

I hope your customers weren't too rude to you. ❤️you could also try transferring to another Starbucks. That one sounds like no one cares.
