Just curious about a weird first experience as a trainer (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by magicalmissfitz
Not quite a rant just need feedback here. I was recently passed up for a promotion to shift supervisor. Was told I wasn’t ready for it yet but they want to put me on that path. NBD. I understand and am still determined to help the team and work towards that goal.

I am also a shiny new barista trainer and was told during the rejection speech from my SM that he wants me to be the “lead barista trainer”. I asked for clarity later whether that includes any increase in hours or pay rate and he said it’s not really a title just more of a, he will be counting on me for training stuff and helping to build our team culture within the store because that’s something I was really wanting to do as SSV.

Cut to today (two days after the rejection convo) we have a newbie starting who needed to do her First Sip and I’ve been assigned as her trainer annnd I’ve literally never trained anyone til her (yet I’m “lead”) and my SM has me do her First Sip because he’s not on site today while she’s there.

My SSV was upset because that took me off the floor so fucked up her play and she also had to take time out to show me where to get first sip materials and get things set up to do the things
for the new hire. While getting those materials together I saw it specifically said that managers are supposed to do First Sip. We weren’t able to do her Onboarding paperwork today other than availability so she has to come back tomorrow anyway when he hopefully will be there to get that for us.

So all that to say, is it okay for me to be a little miffed/upset/confused that I felt like I was put out to dry today for my first training experience? Like I was given an SM level duty despite being told I’m not ready for SSV and am getting nothing more than the standard training bonus for this?

I need to know if I should address it and draw a line if my love of this job and my team is being taken advantage of like my bf says it seems like it is. I have a history of not being able to say no and taking on more than I should be expected to and I can’t tell if this is one of those times again.

TIA for any advice or similar stories you can share. Like I said, I want to do my part to support the team but if this is way out of the norm I don’t want to set this as standard going forward.

You're in the right. Looks like you have a head on your shoulders. Your SM should be in the store doing the first sip, too be able to fill out paperwork. And your mixed roles of Slead and BT couldn't be a thing. Either a playcaller or a barista trainer you should have both on the play when your doing this training so they are seperate people. You're being overburdened with store manager tasks. Godspeed.

Hey, Lotteri, just a quick heads-up:
**seperate** is actually spelled **separate**. You can remember it by **-par- in the middle**.
Have a nice day!

Hey /u/CommonMisspellingBot, just a quick heads up:
Your spelling hints are really shitty because they're all essentially "remember the fucking spelling of the fucking word".

And your fucking delete function doesn't work. You're useless.

Have a nice day!

Thanks like idk. I’m not even really super upset about it I just wanted to check in and see if that’s a normal thing to do as a trainer before I say anything about it if I say anything at all 🤷🏻‍♀️
