I’ve worked all kinds of customer service jobs since I was 16 and I firmly believe that the people who fuck over retail employees and food service—any type of service for that matter—have never worked in retail/food/services etc.

I have the most patience when it comes to long waits and wrong orders or out of stock items because I’ve been on the other end of it. So I SWEAR, whenever a shitty customer comes in I’m always thinking, “man you’ve never worked a day in customer service”

I do think there can be a disparity between food service and retail too. I have a friend who worked in retail for a decade and can be such a pain in the ass at restaurants it's unbelievable. I think people who have been in food service tend to be the MOST understanding, with retail at a close second.

Yeah I second this. Though I feel like from personal experience hospitality majors have a terrible reputation for being Karens in the Making. I have some cousins who intern at big hotels and are in school for hospitality and their expectations of people getting paid minimum wage are way too high. They’ll be pleasant for a good few minutes, talk shit behind the employees back, and look for any opportunity to criticize the behavior. Nitpicking everything and talking about how it’s unacceptable in running a business. Just returning something to Ross, threw a fit because the cashier wasn’t boisterous. We once went out to lunch New Years Day in the busiest city in the area and had to wait an hour for our food because the restaurant had multiple callouts and the only thing that bothered me was my hangover headache all their whining made worse. They loudly stated multiple times they weren’t going to leave tips so I went through all of their bills to add up the percent I’d be tipping to compensate. Just to apologize for their attitude. Now that I see it in my relatives I feel like I can’t stop seeing it in other people. I hear hospitality major I do an internal eye roll.

oh my god ABSOLUTELY. i know so hard how it is to be working in a customer service job and because of that im always so forgiving. i say thank you religiously, tip everytime, and when something goes wrong, i just smile and say "its ok, dont worry about it."

sometimes too, it can be how people are brought up, but its for certain that the best customers have empathy in them for what its like to do customer service and god do i love those customers.

Anybody who works in customer service knows some people who also work in custom service can still be assholes.

Too true!!! The biggest take away from my time at Starbucks was to be patient with all service staff. One never knows the management, clients, and personal issues they put up with daily.
