Is anyone else’s store very mornings vs nights?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mattchaa
I know most jobs are like this but I’ve been a shift for 2 1/2 years and the last few months it has been CRAZY dramatic at my store with mornings and night crew. (I work nights) Our store doesn’t distribute support tasks evenly, and most of not close to all of the things are put off on the closing team. But our morning team just hates us suddenly for no reason? To the point where new baristas are being trained to not like us. I’ve gone to the store manager about it on several occasions but they do nothing since they’re kinda close with the openers. Is it like this at anyone else’s store? How are support taste distributed at yours?

We don’t really have a set morning or set closing crew. Most of our partners work all shifts. So they all know the different difficulties both morning and closing shifts face.

I feel like everyone should work each shift at least once! Putting yourself in other peoples shoes is important.

it sucks how much discord there is between mornings and nights. like night crew resets the entire store for morning to run smoothly and they’ll always find something to complain about. i wrote nice notes one night and they still complained ab it

That’s how it is at my store too. And the thing is like, we. do. NOT. go. home. At the end of our shifts. We stay until things are done. They clock out when it hits 3pm

Mine is the exact same way too. I’m the main closing shift supervisor and it feels like I have the morning, mid, and my SM all against me. I get no support what so ever. And what makes it even worse is that the closers who close at night work their asses off and they don’t get any acknowledgement all they get is complaints. Morning shifts at my store are lazy and selfish. I’m sorry you have to deal with drama at your store as well.

I’ve thought about contacting the dm over it because it’s gotten so out of hand. It’s all about peak at my location so they don’t do support tasks at all in the morning. We were once told that they aren’t even able to do dishes. But there’s always 7 if not 8 people on the floor where for a happy hour well have a 3 to 4 partner play lol.

I wouldn’t go to your district manager. I know it sounds crappy but leapfrogging isn’t something that they like, there are 2 levels in front of them for a reason, and they have more important things to worry about. Realistically they will just say it is up to your SM and not do anything. What you can do is talk to your shift(s), and maybe talk to your SM with your shifts. A toxic attitude from the morning people doesn’t help anyone in the store, not does it with closers right back at them. Your store needs a very clear cut no bad mouthing the other day parts from any person to any other partners. Many shifts do not understand the struggles faced by the Opposite Day part shifts, because they become so engrossed in their role. Open communication may not fix it but it will make it better to some extent. Stress to your SM that the toxic attitudes are damaging the work environment and experience as a whole. With that said though don’t anticipate the expectations to be lowered. Also I wouldn’t name any partners in particular, you want it to be a store issue not a specific partner issue, at least in the eyes of your SM.

That’s a very good idea! I hope that it works for the other poster! In my case, sadly, I haven’t spoken multiple times to the SM and they just kinda ignore it. Our new partners are being trained to “not like or trust the night crew” it’s so sad

Yea that’s usually how it goes at my store morning has the most about of partners because there peak is pretty heavy. But they don’t want to do anything in the morning they are lazy we even have to restock all the fridges just because they said they don’t have time which is a lie. They just don’t want to do anything for their first 4 hours of working all they want to do is just stand around (how do I know this I’ve worked mornings and I’ve seen this) and I thought about contacting my DM but honestly I don’t see the point earlier this summer I reported partners for drinking and coming into the store during their off hours and a noisy shift over heard me talking to me SM about it and told the ENTIRE store and for like a month everyone was calling me a “snitch” and even my other shifts were as well. It’s been a hard summer and this place is very toxic but hey at least I got therapy to go to. I really hope you have better luck at your location then I do at mine.

my store is a set morning and night shift and it has always been a battle for the two years i’ve been working there. we use the daily records book to bash the previous close/the transition between 1st and 2nd shift. The only way that we have found any relief to the drama is switching the baristas schedules around if their availability allows. it kind of makes them respect the other shift more. however if you aren’t the one responsible for scheduling there isn’t much you can do other than try to encourage a culture of family and understanding each shift has their own struggles.

Our store doesn’t really have a set crew of openers/closers but I tend to open most mornings and I can’t lie I do find myself feeling very negative/judgemental towards the closers because I feel like we have a ton to do for open before peak hits. Some mornings I come in and feel like I have to do closing duties before I can open. I sympathize because when I do close I know there’s a lot of shit to do BUT at least at our location our mornings and early afternoons get crazy busy and the nights are slower. They have the time to do all those duties. We run around the store like we are preparing for battle every morning.

It’s different with my store with that :| the night crew stays until everything is done so they don’t leave until they’re finished whereas the morning/midday people leave when they’re scheduled to. So it starts a lot of frustration all the way around. My location is also very busy all night.
bbun2234 points3y ago
Ahhh understandable then! I think everyone just has to take into consideration what times of the day the store is most busy and take that into account before placing blame on others. I wish that midday people did more then just show up for 4 hours and just leave. There is a lot more pressure on openers/closers.

Same here I just got done with closing everyday for a month so sick of it

I’ve come to a level of acceptance that day shift will not do their ops cards and blame everything on the morning peak, while at the same time expecting a three partner closing crew to make everything look perfect.
mattchaa [OP]2 points3y ago
My store doesn’t even have a day shift; it’s so crazy

My store is the exact same. Exact accept my manager is best friends with the morning shift supervisor

At my store, there's a pretty set closing/opening shift set. Unfortunately, our SM can't really switch it up due to everyone's availability and the usual opening Shift Manager is not well liked by anyone. My most successful solution is loudly reading task cards when I come in and asking if the tasks have been completed (of course not, they're never marked). It's petty, but it holds everyone to the same standard.

We had (have still, but not as bad as before) the same issue at my store. It was mostly caused by the shift who opened the most, and she’s a handful lol. She will literally search the entire store ground up to find something wrong. I’m primarily a closer, occasionally an opener on weekends when I have more availability. We could have literally the smoothest, most flawless close ever of all time and AM shift would still leave passive aggressive comments about it. (I shit you not, once she complained that there was a 1lb bag of beans crooked on the retail shelf)
On top of that, she doesn’t get ANY tasks done in the am because they’re “busy” leaving more tasks for the closers (seen the numbers, nothing unmanageable. Occasionally busy but usually during morning peak, with plenty of time to do things around then.) and she’s asked our manager multiple times for more opening baristas, when most nights we only have the coverage for one closing barista and the closing shift. It’s wild.
So yeah, I 100% understand the whole “open vs close” battle, and how the openers often adopt the negative attitude towards the closers from their shift. Only thing that’s made it better is baristas slowly realizing how batshit this particular shift is, unfortunately. I hope your situation resolves itself soon!

I was a shift in the 90’s and there was almost always openers vs closers drama. It helps if there’s some partners who work a mix of both, but I think that has always been and always will be an issue.
