One day I told my trainer I was gonna clock out and kill myself.

She yelled about how I absolutely must not do that, and if I was gonna kill myself it better be on company time.

You kill yourself on the clock, preferably on the floor so we have to close down and call in hazmat.

Please bleed in puddles larger than 6 inches (a dollar bill is roughly six inches) or else we’ll have to clean it up ourselves.

Exactly.

Today we were wondering if our coworkers would get a day off if we all killed ourselves Jonestown style while we closed.

I have heard that you get at least a day or two of bereavement leave if a coworker dies— usually in the case of suicides— but they don’t close the store, they bring in partners from other stores, so if coverage is slim all over the district.

It’s horrifying we’ve all considered this, even as a joke.

My manager asked if I would find coverage for my next shift while I was in the ER for attempting. I didn’t.

For. Real. If life feels so difficult and hopeless that someone wants to end it, their boss could at least have the courtesy to help keep them withdrawn from life while they're recovering. Jeez.
