breaks and dress code (self.starbucksbaristas)

just got hired and i'm mad nervous!!!

i wasn't sure where to post this or who to talk to but i have a lot of anxiety over it! i have a chronic illness that means i have to use the restroom every 1-2 hours. it's extremely annoying and embarrassing but i have to live with it. i'm really scared to bring this up with the store manager. do you think accommodations for this will even be possible?

i'm also broke and don't have many clothes that fit the dress code right now. no shoes at all, really. is it possible for me to bend the dress code just a little the first two weeks until i get my paycheck?

i'm hoping this is just a lot of anxiety over things that aren't Such A Big Deal but i figured it wouldn't hurt to post here anonymously.

Welcome to the team!!

First of all, as far as restroom breaks go I would make sure that you tell your store manager privately that you will need that sort of accommodation so that she can let the shift managers know. If you don’t feel comfortable with that, that’s okay too! At my current location, any time you feel the need to go you simply inform the shift manager that you need to “take a personal” and they will have someone take your place while you go. This can be difficult during peak especially, but if you’re at a low volume store it shouldn’t be a problem.

As far as the dress code goes, again it can really depend on the store manager. Mine was fairly lenient when I was first starting. I would definitely invest in nonslip shoes; I have seriously injured myself because of the slippery floors. The floors will be wet. Always. $1 is a wonderful resource for this; I got my current non slips for $40. Otherwise, just make sure you wear modest clothing. Stick to black, white, gray, and navy until you get more familiar with the $1

Don’t sweat it though! You got this, just remember that lots of people less capable than you undoubtedly work at Starbucks. Ultimately, it’s just coffee. You’ll do fine.

Firstly you must inform your manager - advocate for yourself!!!! It’s, like, the law (I think) to accommodate you.

I got new non-slips just the other day from Walmart for $28, which is on the low end of the price scale - though I understand your money troubles (only $28 and it put me out for the week)

My manager, for example, was totally okay with giving me time to get shoes that fit dress code/etc. And I think you’ll find some people will consistently break dress code anyway, if that makes you feel better.

As for actual clothes, goodwill/thrift stores. Just stock up on plain polos. I have a hard time finding pants at goodwill, but that doesn’t mean you will!

Another option - do you know anyone you can borrow clothes from temporarily? It’s worth a shot, you know?

The most important thing here is to advocate for yourself, and with confidence! Generally I’ve found people really respect that straightforwardness; tiptoeing around it won’t do you any favors.

Good luck!!!! It will all work out, I’m sure of it!
