Just a rant about shift training (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Nalshyu
So I took a shift position against everyone’s warnings and one of my shifts is a fucking asshole. I want to preface this by saying I got him the barista job when we were roommates and he was promoted before me due to the fact he was denied a roastary position and my store manager felt bad so he promoted him instead of me. Was and still am salty but I can do my job.

He’s a fucking dick. He refuses to let me do anything I’ve trained on. The pull? Can’t do it unless he’s hovering and yelling at me. Count? Nope; I apparently don’t know enough. Tills? Fuck no? And he took a lunch so I was running the floor and he came out, yelled at me for moving people around and told me it’s his fucking shift and I’m not mock running anything.

I. Am. Livid

Edit: I want to say I’ve been with Starbucks for 2 years, he was here 6 months when he got promoted. I was trained a year ago on shift stuff before my manager force transferred me cause idk he was a dick so I can do everything a shift can do.

Talk to your store manager about it! There’s nothing wrong with not liking another shift’s decisions, but you shouldn’t be yelled or cursed at for it. There’s no need for hostility and it’s more counter productive than anything. See what your SM says, and maybe ask that shift if they can coach you and help you to learn these tasks (I know you already know them but in that ssv’s head you don’t, so just kinda sit there nod your head and ignore them)

I’m going to preface this with... I get where you’re coming from and why you’re mad, because I’ve been where you are. I was passed over for shift promotions when I was with corporate, watched others who were less qualified/knowledgeable, and quite frankly cared a lot less than I did about the job or Starbucks. I was actually fired from corporate for trying to uphold standards. I now manage a license store, and am much happier, and more successful, for it than I probably would have ever been able to be at corporate.

You have to recognize that corporate Starbucks is a behemoth. If you’re around long enough, you’ll start to see patterns in who is and is not promoted, and it rarely has anything to do with skill or knowledge... it’s all about attitude. There’s good, albeit misguided, reasoning behind this pattern - they figure if they promote the right attitude, the skills and knowledge can follow. This, sadly, is not usually the case. It may have been once, but c’est la vie.

So, you have to self-assess to see what you need to portray that they’re looking for to get promoted. Then, you’ve got two choices... you can either be true to yourself, be the best barista you can be and watch for other opportunities, or make the necessary changes yourself to fit what they need to see in order to be promoted.
