Sir, if you're gonna toss the money on the counter when I have my hand extended all the way out, at least have the decency to say thank you when one wishes you a nice day

If I’m feeling really bitchy I’ll set their change on the counter to make a petty point lol

Oh I did this once. Maybe like 4-5 years ago and this lady went INSANE. I had to threaten to call the police. I’m like she is going insane because I “nicely “ set her change on the counter, because she was digging and digging thru her purse. Which she was. And the next person already started ordering. But damn, she FLIPPED OUT. And tried yelling at my barista saying what I just did, assuming she was in charge because she was older than me clearly and I said, ma’am, I am the supervisor running the shift I’m going to have to ask you to leave. I refunded her, refused to make her drink and told her to leave repeatedly until she took a chair and attempted to break it. That’s when I said I was calling the police lol. I mean, this lady was on a whole new level of crazy. All in all, I wasn’t even shook because I still was the one calm, and let her do it all to her self in front of a ton of people in the cafe lol.

Some regions of the world see hand to hand exchange as disrespectful. A previous manager taught me that. Made it a bit easier to deal with this, but I still hate it.

Okay sure but the only people who ever do this to me are old and white

I agree. But it's a small coping mechanism that I'm trying to force my brain to accept.

I'd take the 'old' off though. The last few years have gotten worse.

Did they say what cultures? Genuinely curious.

I know for a fact this happens in Japan. I've been to Japan multiple times. They have cash trays sitting on the counter next to the register, and it's customary to set your payment into the tray, the employee would take the tray with the payment, ring up the payment, put the change (if any) along with the receipt on the tray, and set the tray back down onto the counter for you to take your change/receipt. totally normal practice there.

"Just take my money," he spat and threw it on the counter after I repeatedly told him his total but he kept ignoring me in favor of what must have surely been the most important conversation in the world on his phone.
