Confused About Pay Rate (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by giomccoy
Hello all! My store pays us biweekly, and I worked 44.25 hours during week one, and 61.22 hours during week two. This would equal 105.47 hours total. (These numbers are so exact because they're coming from teamworks)

I've heard that you get payed time and a half when working overtime. That would mean I should be getting payed 46.375 hours for week one, and 71.83 hours for week two, right? This would equal 118.205 hours total.

My store says they pay $9/hr, but my paycheck for this cycle wasn't even $900. Even without calculating time and a half for overtime, my paycheck for 105.47 hours should be above $900, right? And if we do calculate overtime, it should be a little over $1,000. Yet, my paycheck was in the $800's.

I'm not complaining or blaming my store, as I love my job and I'm grateful for how many hours I get and the money I'm making. However, I'm trying to understand why my paycheck is always lower than I expect. I assume it's "taxes," but I'm young so I don't fully understand the specifics of how taxes affect my pay.

Hopefully one of you wonderful experienced baristas can help me comprehend my situation a little better. Thank you!

WHOA! That’s a lot of hours! I hope you got through those okay!

I think it may vary by state, but I know where I’m from, overtime is time and a half. It sounds like your paycheck did not include the time and a half in it. Either that, or a suspiciously large amount of money went towards taxes. I’m also pretty sure your SM has to approve the overtime with corporate or something like that, but I’m not sure since I have never gone into overtime myself. I would definitely check your pay stubs and ask your SM or DM about the difference in how much you were paid, because $200 is a lot of money to be missing for over 100 hours in the span of two weeks. I hope you get this all sorted out! Best of luck!

Time and a half after 40 hours is a federal legal requirement. Some states have more generous laws (like time and a half after 8 hours in a day). SM can’t deny OT pay - there’s no “approval” other than companies can require you get permission to work OT first. But if worked, it must be paid. Managers can discipline you for working OT without authorization but they still have to pay you.

OP: it could very likely be taxes - figure 15-20% total depending on your state, how you filled out your tax withholdings, etc. Print out your pay stub off the Hub and it will show you your gross earnings as well as line items for all the deductions.

Yeah its because of taxes. My pay rate is close to $12 and when I had 100 hours I still didnt hit $1000. Only got like $950. taxes are a bitch lol

Withholding. It's because of withholding. When you have a big check more is withheld from your pay, but you settle up at tax time and get the over withheld amount back.

People that put 0 allowances on their w4 see the impact of this much worse then someone with the proper number of allowances.

Please look on teamworks to make sure that all the shifts are in their and match w the number of hours you are paid for. Check your pay stub.

A couple things could've happened.

1. Your hours are not correct on TeamWorks so your manager didnt put in Payroll correctly. In that case, let your manager know which shifts are missing and she will add them. The pay for those shifts should eventually be reflected in a paycheck
2. Taxes are hella high. I'm calculating your pay, using the low end for taxes so i'm doing 8% and hour

week 1: 8$ x 40 hours = 320

overtime week 1: 4.25 hours x 12$ = 51

week 2: 8$ x 40 hours= 320

overtime week 2: 21.22 hours x 12$= 254.64

you total is abut 950$.

I went $1 an hour to account for taxes. Unless taxes are high (idk where you live so i cant speak for that) you could have been shorted some pay.

Double check ur paystub and hope i helped!
