Question from a customer about proper etiquette.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by IridiumEgg
Hello everyone,
I don't work at Starbucks so I'm sorry if this post doesn't belong here. I have a question about proper etiquette to workers so I figured that this is the best place to ask.
I garden as a hobby and I ask shops for their used coffee grounds now and then for my compost pile. The person at the front seems happy to gather up their grounds and give it to me. Is there an etiquette to asking for their used coffee grounds? I know that working customer service can suck and I hate to make them do extra work for a non-paying guest. I'm as nice as possible and try to come in during the times when it's not busy and leave a few in the tip jar. Is this too much of a nuisance to workers or am I fine to keep doing it? Thanks.

i dont think its too much to ask at all! just be understanding that it may take a while, as long as you arent rushing them or being rude it should be fine! also kudos for leaving a tip, thats extra sweet

I know that there are some stores that keep their grounds in bags for this exact purpose. However at my store as soon as the coffee is made, the grounds get thrown away so we wouldn’t be able to give you any. I’m not sure how it is at every store though.

We have a basket by the door where we keep all the used grounds for people to take, with a little chalk board saying to take them and all

We used to have a lady ask for coffee grounds and once every couple of months she’d bring in something she made with the vegetables and fruits in her garden That made the whole crew happy But it’s hardly any work anyway

Are you my customer? We have a lady who does this! Honestly, as someone who became an adult in a highly environmentalist area, I am 200% more than happy to give our coffee grinds. I think I was one of the first people our particular custy asked, and what I did was take down her name and contact info so as to convey it to our shift supervisor(s)/ASM to get the final okay.
Thank you for being so conscientious. You're not hassling us at all! If you're coming by while it's slow, too, I'm sure that whoever's helping you out appreciates the break from routine.
ETA: What we gather up for our customer is our espresso pucks. As another commenter mentioned I don't think there is a food health/safety-code-friendly way for us to give you our drip grinds unfortunately. (Much as I would love to! You'd be sparing me the backbreaking trash trip after brewing drip a few times...)

Thanks, that’s great to hear that it’s not a bother. I’ve noticed those tightly packed pucks in there and I figured they were for espresso! I think I’ve received grinds from drip coffee as well since I see the paper filters in there.

We have a lady who comes inconsistently asking for our coffee grounds.
From experience with her:
Bring your own container for the grounds. Please make it one with a wide enough hole so we don't have to squeeze wet coffee filters into it.
My store gets properly slow past the morning rush so this might not apply, but please don't come close to closing, we definitely won't make enough coffee to make it worth giving it to you.

Our stores grounds go right in the trash. However if someone calls us about it we will start saving them for whenever they do decide to get them. Sometimes they ask on the spot and come back at the end of the night to gather what we used throughout the day.
