Call off policy??? Corporate store.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by orcadork568
When I got hired no one ever explained the full call off policy to me my store just kind of went by if you had a good enough excuse they didn't really push you on it. Well over labor day weekend I was supposed to work on Monday and I ended up getting really bad food poisoning and couldn't afford to go to the doctor because 1, why would I if it's food poisoning and 2, I don't have great insurance. My shift lead is now trying to require that I get a doctor's note because she saw I had posted one red cup on my social media and is insisting I was hungover and now I'm going to be under some sort of probation even though we have two partners who call off regularly without any disciplinary action. Can anyone fill me in on with the official call off policy is so I can see if what they're doing is something I should expect in the future. I get how it looked but having one beer on my night off shouldn't be enough to put me on some sort of probation right? Just for reference this was my second time calling off and I've been working here for about 6 months. Thank you in advance!

Honestly, it depends on the store and if the persona has something against you. You are supposed to call out while finding coverage, and if you don't find any you have to call the store and let the supervisor on duty know that you didn't find any. Personally, our store manager doesn't ask for evidence if it's only one day, but if it is multiple days in a row he may ask for it. It just seems like this shift has something against you, honestly. All the stores i've worked at are the same as mine.

First of all, a shift lead is just that a lead, not a manager. They can tell you that you need a doctor's note, however, you are under no obligation to show it to a shift. I would just wait to talk to your store manager.
The official policy is to call out as soon as possible when you realize you are sick. Usually, if it's a one time thing then most likely it's fine. If your manager can establish that it is a pattern (example calling out every Saturday or once a week), then they can require a doctor's note.

You don't need a doctor note unless it's 3+ days

Thanks for all the advice ever since I called off I have now been getting rude comments from my coworkers and even some shifts. I'm at the point where I want to cry when I leave my shift today. I want to report it but I'm afraid my manager wont even take me seriously. This may mean quitting and going to a new store.

From everything I’ve heard if you have vomiting, fever, diarrhea, or are contagious with anything within 24 hours of your shift you’re supposed to call out for health and safety reasons. We work in food and customer service, you cannot show up sick like that to work because you could get others sick. Anybody trying to give you shit for it is an ass who probably is trying to justify the times they’ve called out for no reason at all and claimed to be sick. It happens all the time. If your manager doesn’t hear you out on how people have been treating you, request a transfer.
