Please help me!! Question about being a minor (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by animmari
Ok, so I am a 17 year old barista. And I’ve graduated high school. Does that still limit the amount of hours I can get at Starbucks even though I don’t go to school anymore??
The school year started and my hours got instantly cut. I need to do something really really fast because I have to help my family by splitting the bills and vet costs.
My manager tried to give me more hours apparently and the system wouldn’t let her.
I’d be really grateful if anyone could help me with this, if not, I’ve already started applying to other places for more hours.
Note: I’m in Nevada.
Thank you guys for taking the time out of your day to respond I can't believe how wonderful you guys are thanks for all the helpful replies!!

In my 6 years I have seen a lot of this. At my last store my manager made them wait till they turned 18. Because of the laws like in the city. Curfew and stuff so they couldn’t open or close because of the time they had to be there or stay there. My new store we have a 17 year old who graduated and she is working all the time literally hitting 40 hours a week and the curfew is different here since I moved to a different town. I think it really depends on your location. Your manager should know. Ask them! :)

Late answer sorry; apparently when I turned seventeen and a half i didn't need a curfew anymore and had no restrictions?? So weird I don't know why it mattered if i was seventeen or seventeen and a half but I guess it is what it is haha
Thank you for replying I appreciate it

I work for the Technology Desk for Starbucks. I'd recommend calling PCC and speaking with them about labor laws. Explain your situation and see if they can do anything to help you out.

Are you in Las Vegas? Come work at my store. Jk. No labor laws shouldn't be that strict I have a kid on my team in the same situation we can give him hours up to 39. It may be a Starbucks company problem though. I work at a licensed location.

Sorry for the super late answer, I got it figured out! For some reason when I hit seventeen and a half the system let my manager put more hours in? Kind of odd but I guess it works!
