Looking to become a shift! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ironfistpenguin
So I know this a pretty commonly asked question, but just seeking some advice if possible. :) I am a partner of about 8 months and was a manager at a fast food facility prior to coming to Starbucks for the ASU program. I’m only 21, so I don’t know if my age will deter me from promotion, but I did become a manager at 18 at my previous job so I do luckily have experience as a manager. I was excited to not be a manager anymore when I came to Starbucks, but now I’m struggling financially. This is mainly because the shifts are the only ones who get 40 hours a week at my store; as a barista, I only get 25 and I am the barista with the highest hours at my store! I caught on to the job quickly and am comfortable as a barista. I know I need to become a shift to get the hours I need to be comfortable financially again. I also don’t want to be that person who’s only in it for the money; I do genuinely care about my job and am ready for this next step. I would rather become a shift and work 40 hours a week with only Starbucks than get a second job (I have one lined up, but don’t want to take it). Starbucks and its benefits really help me, so I don’t want to invest my time into a second company. We just got a new SM who decided she didn’t like me as soon as she came and that’s a whole other thing, so I have thought I may need to transfer to be promoted. I also wouldn’t want baristas who’ve been there longer to resent me if I were promoted. I was asked if I’d be interested in being a shift during my interview because of my managerial experience and at the time I wasn’t, but said I’d be open to it after I was comfortable with the job. I am just looking for advice on becoming a shift, if I should transfer, and what other shifts did to make themselves stand out. Thank you to all you wonderful baristas and shifts in advance. ❤️

As long as you are over 18 you can be a shift. When you express interest to your SM if they think you are fit they will interview you. And if yoir DM is hands on with the stores, he may interview you as well. The interview process are typical leadership questions, nothing too crazy. I didn't have management experience before becominf a shift. I became one when I turned my six months working for the company. :) It's really easy

Make sure you fill out your PDP and write down everything you’d bring to the table as a shift

I was a partner for only 6 months and only 18 and was promoted to shift. All you can do is talk to your store manager and tell them you are open to the idea of becoming an SSV and willing to work for it!

It's different for every district. Age doesn't matter, I'm 20 and just got promoted to shift. I've been a partner since January of this year, and I absolutely worked my butt off to become a shift. I made sure to make a statement with my work ethic first and foremost before even thinking about becoming a shift.
The work you do speaks for itself. You can also talk to your store or division manager about some personal goals to set for yourself within the company, and make a plan to help you achieve those goals.
