Having to find my own coverage for a unexpected funeral. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Gigertt
I told my manager quite a few days ago I cannot go to my shift Friday because my uncle unexpectedly died, and she’s been making me find my own coverage. Right before I came on a few weeks ago, someone’s family member died and they had time off and bereavement pay. And no one can take my shift. Will I get in trouble for going to my uncles funeral? I was told I am suppose to at-least have them help me find coverage, not me search for it.

Ummmm in my years of being a partner I have one rule which I wish I followed my first few years with this company. Never choose the company over family. This company in my experience has never helped me out when I needed it. But yet I have done doubles and doubles worked open to close and cancelled on so many friends and family members. No more. I do not take shifts if I can’t. I will not miss any more funerals and neither should you. You told them you couldn’t be there. Your managers job is to find coverage. That’s their job. It’s their store. You got this. You can not get fired for one no show... even tho you told them. And if your manager gives you ANY shit, call pcc. I can promise they or your district manager will have your back.

Strong agree, as much as Starbucks is branded as one of the best to work for, managers can be shitty! You’re allowed to go to a fucking funeral and not have to worry about work.

Oh my goodness, thank you. I also called out last week for the first time for being sick and I’m scared they’re gonna get mad. I’ve been so flustered that I’ve had to find my own coverage, it’s hard to talk about and my manager has constantly been texting me asking if anyone said yes. No one can. We are all over worked. My uncle died unexpectedly from meningitis. And she even told me to tell everyone the reason so they feel bad.

I swear I have had 3 managers and even shifts in 6 years you feel so horrible and guilty. WHY?!? You are sick! You can not be there. It’s like a common Starbucks problem. They are mad at the loss of someone on the floor. Not you. It’s a problem that if we had more coverage that it wouldn’t be as of a big deal. But Starbucks cuts back on labor to make more money. You go. They will get over it. I have always felt so so guilty and I’m over it. I am not going in if I’m sick. I am not missing big events anymore. And I feel sick to my stomach how much I wasted and choice Starbucks instead. Go to your funeral. I’m so so sorry for your loss.

No call out. Say it is a family emergency. You have them advanced notice

Sorry for your loss.

Check the partner guide for what qualifies as an excused absence and bereavement pay.
Unfortunately - uncles, aunts, cousins & other distant relatives don’t qualify under bereavement pay. It’s unfortunate but Starbucks has made it clear what they consider acceptable in terms of missing work for. Your manager is just following the partner guide at this point.

Of course everyone is different may over look it and allow you to go - but Starbucks has laid it out on paper what the policy is and managers are expected to uphold those policies whether they agree or disagree.
