The best way I've had it explained is if a drink is already made with milk (i.e. lattes, cappuccinos, etc), use the left menu and it'll charge the customer extra if needed. If a drink doesn't automatically come with milk and they just want a little added (i.e. iced coffee, cold brew, etc), use the menu on the right and it won't charge. Basically the logic is if a drink gets a substantial amount of an unusual type of milk, there's reason to charge extra, but if it's just a splash then there's no point in charging.

I look at it like this - if it’s a splash of milk, use the right. If it’s a drink that’s comprised of milk like a latte or cappuccino, use the left. I think technically the cutoff is 4 ounces, which is half a cup.

If it's less than the sample cup which is 4oz I believe, you have to charge. So technically, you charge everything that's milk based: Lattes, Cappuchinos, Frappuchinos (doesn't matter if the drink is made hot or iced, it has more than 4oz). An easy way to also remember is that Iced Coffees and Cold Brew get less than 4oz so you don't charge for it, BUT if they ask for an iced coffee with extra of X milk we're supposed to charge for it, but honestly
I only charge it to rude people lol

What everyone else said.
If it's less than like 2oz, use the right. So like if they say they want an Americano with a little bit of cream you'd hit the brave button on the right side.
If they want a soy latte, you hit the soy botton on the left.
