Conflict with Work schedule and being a full time student (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by crzkt
I (18f) am having trouble balancing my work and school as a freshman student. I started college 3 weeks ago and started working at a licensed store on campus 4 weeks ago. My manager made it clear to me that the store was one of the busiest college campus Starbucks in the west side of the U.S., and coming from a busy corporate store, that sounded like a perfect transition for me. Our store has a policy where you can only work up to 28 hours a week. Most of the people at this Starbucks are new hires, and my manager appreciates that I have years of experience at another SB. However, I started getting scheduled 28 hours a week, and at first I was able to manage it, but the past 2 weeks I've noticed that I am falling behind on schoolwork because I'm a closer and it takes me an hour and a half to get home from the campus (I usually get home around 11 pm). I study every day for around 3-4 hours and I am trying to manage my time better due to my laziness in high school that set me back from a lot of opportunities. I tried asking my manager today if it was possible to cut down my hours, and that someone else (with closing experience) offered to take one of my shifts next week so I could focus on my homework. She told me no, and that I should be able to manage working 28 hours with 15 credit hours because "our shift managers can do it, and you will eventually learn to manage the time too". How exactly am I able to go about this? I've had this mentality that school comes before work. I've worked really hard to get into this school, and I'm trying to put my effort and time into my schoolwork, but it is hard to catch up because of how much I work. I know that some people work harder, but I personally think this is too much for me at least in this moment.

School should always come first. The last job I had tried to tell me otherwise. I bet you can guess what I did. Hopefully you won't have to leave, but you have to make it clear that you need your hours cut. Everyone is different! You shouldn't be held to a certain standard when everyone has their own pace. If you're willing, make it *very* clear that working 28 hours a week is not an option.

Best of luck to you!
