What do you wish your barista trainer had taught you? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by isthispassionpit
Personally, I can’t think of many skills I lacked getting out of training other than tasks that weren’t necessary for me to know as someone who worked only morning shifts. However, I do wish more resources had been made available to me.

As a fairly seasoned barista trainer now, I’m still trying to make sure I cover my bases — and not just the standards on the training plan. So, what’s some knowledge/advice/information you wish your barista trainer had given you when you were a green been?

fun fact: i didn't get a barista trainer to train me at all, it was just random people and I mostly taught myself. I'm currently a shift and my sm didn't train me so I had to train myself too lmao, :v what can i say but to keep thRiViInNnNnG

One thing I try to do with new people or back in the day when I trained was something a lot of people forget. It’s not about drive or recipes or how to mop or something lol. It’s simple as introducing them. Introduce them to partners. Ask if they have met yet. Introduce them to regulars and I think that alone is so so important.

How to properly steam milk for cappuccinos, doppio macchiatos, etc. Also how to do drive thru...how is that not part of training?

They changed it now, it’s now part of the training plan.

Hmmm I don’t think my store got the update

Our DM really pushed for our barista trainers to follow the training plan a few months ago. I only got to train one barista, it’s there. Maybe ask your SM about this?

How to navigate the partner hub for resource materials instead of using the search bar...

I was personally taught this, but you CANNOT pour a hot latte over ice to make an iced drink, even if the customer asks. If you make a hot drink by mistake and they actually wanted it iced, (or they don’t say iced until you’ve already made the drink) you can’t just throw ice in there. Even if the customer is in a rush and says it’s fine to just put ice in it, DONT. You have to completely remake it because if you put ice into hot milk bacteria will start to grow very quickly and can make people very sick. Same reason you can’t put hot food into a fridge, it will spoil and be very bad.

Go over cold foams very well. They can be very confusing, and the partners at my store as well as many on this sub still debate over how they are supposed to be made.

basically everything. i got 0 training. we sat at a table twice and read powerpoints then they told my SM i was ready and for a month after i just sweated and struggled. there’s someone being trained right now at my store and the difference is staggering. her trainer spends entire shifts just standing with her, talking things out, showing her how things work and why and when. i wish i had had any of that kind of guidance.

How to use the “Partial Day” time off. A few weeks ago I asked my sm that I can only work an opening shift for a day and we sat down together and went through it (she was doing other things on her laptop while helping me). I thought that if I put the times from opening until the time I needed to leave that it was requesting to only work those hours for that day and I even put in the comments that I could only work those hours. But when I got my schedule for that week she scheduled me to work AFTER the time I wasn’t able to work. I was really upset and confused because she was there to help me AND I even left in the comment box that I can only work from this time to this time.

So how does requesting partial day off work? Do I just put in the times I’m can’t work or do I put in the times that I can work?

To make drinks. Literally spent one day in bar and I didn’t learn bar until I transferred to another store.
