Am I just dumb? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by probably-me7
Today I worked an 8 hour shift as a SSV, and I “took my lunch” (clocked off and continued doing the food pull” so I could have it done as soon as possible before we dropped to a 3 floor, but pretty much as soon as I finished doing my shift things (food pull and counting down some tills) we slowed down to about 5 customers a half hour. Should I have just taken an actual lunch? Did I do the right thing by working through my lunch? I’ve only been a SSV for a few months now so I’m still trying to get my footing.

It’s technically illegal to work when you’re off the clock. Don’t do it, even if you feel you need to, you’re not paid enough for that.

I’ve never seen someone work through their lunch. Even if we’re busy. I think everyone deserves their lunch and that you should take it whenever granted.

Take your lunch!!! a) It's against federal labor laws to work off the clock and b) you're no use to your team if you run yourself ragged.

I'm a ssv and I don't care if the store is burning, lunch is in my right and it is illegal to work out of the clock anyway, so. I'm not going to sacrifice my personal time for a company that could change you in any moment.

If I’m not getting paid, I ain’t working.

I understand why you’d want to support your team, but it’s illegal and they need to staff correctly so you never feel like you can’t take 30 minutes (unpaid) for lunch.

Don't work through your lunch. First, it's technically illegal and Starbucks could get in shit for it. Second, you don't get paid enough. It's your job, but your lunch is your time. You don't owe a second of your own time to Starbucks.

I get that ssv have more responsibilities to take care of, but it's still just a job. You get done what you get done, no one's gonna die because the pastries got pulled 10 mins late. Don't do that to yourself.

If you get hurt off the clock, you forfeit your workman’s comp.
