Voids? Wtf lol (self.starbucksbaristas)

Like...what the fuck? This has to be the dumbest fucking metric this company tracks us on. Me pushing a button incorrectly, and going back to FIX IT, SO THE CUSTOMER GETS WHAT THEY NEEDED IS A BAD THING? Like..........WHAT. On top of the fact that they rush us to get everything out in .2 seconds like...absolutely wild lol

**Just to clarify, I’m not in trouble or anything but just the fact that it exists is odd to me lol

The reason they track it is because they don't want you telling the customer the total and then voiding an item and pocketing some of the money. They track it because if one person has too many voids they want it looked into for that reason. It is stupid and annoying though because 99.9% of the time voids are for the reasons you mentioned

It’s so weird because sometimes people just change their mind, or we make a recommendation for something they actually want, so why is that my fault??

It’s not just this company. Every retail company I’ve worked for tracks voids

I had a manager get fired for embezzlement from doing voids. He did it for months. I don't know how much he got or if the company pursued charges but I found that funny because he looked like a straight laced older guy. Shout out to that guy who embezzled from Souplantation like 18 years ago.

does the system just assume a drink is made (and counted for in inventory) the instant you ring it up?

As a metric it can be a useful way to try to figure out a source of any cash shortages the store might be experiencing.

A store manager I know noticed a particularly high void percentage over a long period for a certain barista also coupled with cash shortages. However it wasn’t the void percentage that got the barista separated, it was the video of that barista stuffing cash in their apron...

High void percentages over a sustained period of time can be a sign that something is wrong or it could also mean that a barista needs more training or your customers are just indecisive. A good manager sees the issue and searches for context.
